I have manual gearbox, so it is a bit different. It used to be that in any mode with loud exhaust button pressed engine brake would result in pops and crackles. I would always drive that way and just listen to it. Maybe I run out of pops and crackles fluid? :P

After update the car changed. Now the only way to get any pops and crackles is to turn track mode and downshift into high-rev engine braking. You also can hear one pop when blipping throttle when rev-matching on downshift. If you do a good job rev-matching, it won't make any noise.

That is, unless I really mess up shifting it doesn't make lots of cracks and pops. With the new clutch it is much easier to be precise with shifting, so the noise rarely happens. I can be in a track mode, above at 5K RPM, engine braking and not hear pop pop pop. It now happens maybe 30% times, instead 100% before.

I keep telling myself that the car must be running more efficiently.

 

I had two V6S coupes (Jay, Lance) and Marko's V8S convertible ahead of me on the freeway, with my top down, and they all had active exhaust switched on.


My ears are still bleeding, but in a good way.

 

and I had the O2 update done. No change in Rice Krispies. Sound was subsequently enhanced with the tune.

 

I thought the MT might reduce the sounds somewhat, but Lance's car may have been the noisiest. Could have been due to his fancy footwork.

 

LOL . . . Yes constant double-clutching and rev-matching lets the engine burn a lot of fuel completely disconnected from the transmission. Automatics don't allow that. :-)

 

They updated firmware at the same time as clutch job. With the old clutch I was double-clutching a lot because it would make shifting smoother. With the new clutch, that works as it should, I no longer have to do that.

Maybe that why I think that my car got a lot quieter!

 

Yes, a couple hundred thousand miles on at least 2 trannies, I've never worn out a synchronizer.

 

I really believe that double clutching is unnecessary on a modern transmission, unless there is something wrong with it. Modern synchros aren't what they used to be and can outlast the car with just proper shifting and oil changes.

 

double clutching a modern transmission is more an issue of maintaining control during a downshift rather than one of equipment preservation.

 

Due to weather in Dallas, this is the first day I have driven my manual F-Type since last week at the dealer, when I am pretty sure they ran the ECU/O2 update mentioned above. I have to confess I think the car is the same or more prone to pops and crackles. In fact, given that I am trying to coax any mal-performace out of the clutch that I can, I was having a rather spirited trip into the office today.

Seems like at least in my case, there was no degradation, and maybe a mild increase.

I can't recommend doing this enough. I have a slight detour on my way to office where a recently repaved side road with no traffic and no houses around...

 

I would suggest you park it short of getting it into the office.

 

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet but turning the traction control to Trac mode makes mine very noisy. I know it makes no sense but I'm positive that it works. Tested it many times.

What VINs are affected? So, they do listen.

Weird - Mine got significantly "poppier" in Trac mode as well.
