Is there a way to tell how long a car has sat on the dealers lot?

Do not know the answer but perhaps the correct question is "date of manufacture"?
Is that incorporated into the VIN?
Unless, of course, you mean a used car.

 

Just checked. Apparently the VIN only shows the model year. Not build date.
The chart below shows how to identify model year in the VIN.

MAybe the last numerical digits will tell something in terms of relative age, but mean nothing regarding how long it sat in dealers inventory

The Carfax will tell you. Also some sites like www.iseecars.com list how long a car has been listed on that site. Less reliable than the Carfax, but still helpful.

Yes. It will show when the dealer first offered it for sale. My car sat on the lot for a LONG time. I had them run a Carfax on it before I bought it.

 

If you have access to the car, the sticker on the frame of the driver’s-side door shows date of manufacture (and paint code, etc.)

 

Not sure how precise you want to get but the sticker on the door (at least on my 2018) only shows the month and year.

 

The manufacturer date is not a good indicator of how long a car was on the dealer's lot, at least not in the case of my car. My 2018 was built May 2017. As per the Carfax it was not offered for sale until September 27, 2017. It must have take them a while to ship it over to the US.

 

Car Gurus has that information for almost every new and used car.
