Ar those cones to replace the airboxes? I'm not familiar with them. I've had great (sound) results with cones in other vehicles.

VERY interested to hear your results!

XJ8JR's setup would seem to indicate just the filters will make the most difference.

So yes, the rest of it should be unnecessary to reach the goal of much more sound.

I certainly have no intention to spend 3k on tubes, though I understand if others feel that is worthwhile.

just filters at this stage, I'll have a crack at that and see whether it helps, otherwise I'll look at other things (lower pully/tune/cones) when the warranty is up at the end of the year.

Yes, in my case, the cone filters were the key. I had previously tried K&N panel filters in the stock boxes with zero effect on the whine.

Please ignore the janky redneck heatshields. Chris at Mina Gallery offered to make me some real ones one of these days.

While I do love that one, I still love the original and that's where we first see his Interceptor (you know, the last of the V8s). I feel a movie night coming up soon. Double feature is needed.

I am hoping that you try just the cones first, as a data point for the F-type. Pulley and tune we already know will increase whine.

I just got the car back from the standard BMC filters installed. It sounds louder and a bit gruffer (more of a cough on startup) from the outside, with more pronounced whine inside the cabin as the revs build with the windows up, less so with them down.

It isnt Mad Max's Interceptor by any means (or the Project 8 for that matter) but as a relatively risk free and cheap mod ($500 installed as opposed to $3000 plus installed for the intake and cone filters) I have to say I'm pretty happy.

They confirmed that the standard filter setup doesnt have the blowback filter or the plastic thing inside the pipes, so all that is being done is for the paper filter to be replaced by the cloth. They also confirmed it is a complete bitch to get at the boxes.

Thanks Bruce, I might have to consider getting a pair!
According to Fleabay I can get a pair for around $235 delivered and then install them myself in about an hour. Dunno what is wrong with your installer as it's not that hard, six simple steps I detailed earlier, my guess is they weren't impressed with all the bolts and screws that need to come out to remove the undertray!

Yeah they mentioned that, and a plastic bar, and also I have the winglets on mine (sports design pack) which apparently had to come off too. I have to say that more than the whine, my initial thoughts (I've only driven it for 5 minutes) is that it sounds like it has more bark which I really like, the uncultured swine that I am.

I'm really skeptical that a drop-in filter makes enough of a difference (specifically for whine) while retaining the stock airbox, and no other mods. Video?

Hi. Yes it is more of a whistle than a whine - essentially what I could hear with the engine cover off but a bit louder. I took a clip this morning and it is pronounced on my phone but I cant hear it at all on the computer speakers so I wont post it and embarrass myself! I dont know why it comes out as a whistle in the V6 and a whine in the v8.

I was more impressed by the overall change to the engine note (rather than exhaust note), it all seems a bit noisier in the front.

A little update - so around 3000 - 3500 it has a noticeable whistle, but planting my foot in dynamic it has quite a strong whine over 5000. I cant say for certain that is new as I dont often have it over 5000 rpm but I think it is because I would have noticed it before otherwise.

Interesting, Did they use adapters from the MAF sensor to the cones?

Yes they do, I've ordered the ITG setup for my F-type which is a pair of ITG magogen cone filters and silicon hoses to connect to the maf tubes. Cost was £250 so very reasonable, as they are custom made product I expect to have them in around three weeks.

I now have over 20 quarter mile runs on the car and after my weight reduction and RAM AIR setup the car is running very consistent 11.3@122mph with the odd 11.2s run. Which for a stock car is great!

Once the cone filter are fitted, I shall of course first listen for that glorious whine, if it present I shall leave them fitted and then head back to the quarter mile to see if the car still runs the consistent 11.3's if it does, great, if it runs faster then amazing.
Quarter mile testing is perfect for cone filters to see if they do suffer any heatsink issues from the extended idling from queuing at the strip, luckily the F-Type positions the filters low so heat is less an issue and the SVR has more cooling/airflow in that area too, only risk is the filter media getting dirty and dusty but in fairness the filters inside the air boxes also get dirty due to the snorkels/ram air ducting, as such its vital the filter does the job its designed to do and FILTER!

Look forward to seeing some pics. I'm looking for the adapters for my XFR-S.

No adapters used in my setup. The later model XJs have a different setup where the MAF tube can be disconnected from the airboxes with just enough lip for the cone filters to clamp on to.

I’ve seen that. I’m hoping my late model XFR-S is the same.

Our prayers are answered with a simple mod kit:

I’m not certain this does what most of us want. I want far more exterior supercharger whine. That’ll take care of the interior whine.
