Default Question on reliability

I just recently sold my '03 S-type R and have been considering a new toy and have really been eyeballing a '15 f-type R. Looked up plenty of reviews and everyone seems to love them, but I'm not finding hardly anything about how reliable they've been over the years. My s-type was in the shop every 6-months over the past 12 years, and the last 4 of those years I just let it sit because I was sick of putting money into it. It had "the lurch", the droopy lights, countless failed thermostats. This turned me away from buying a jaguar xf last year when I went looking for a new daily driver. Then I remembered this forum! So for the folks that have owned one for a little bit, has Tata improved jag's reliability? Or would I be looking at another money pit?

My experience has been very good.

2008 XF 4.2 - owned 4.5 years - lots of first year issues with the new model rushed out, beautifully reliable after about year 2;
2011 XF 5.0 - only had it a year or so but rock solid;
2011 XKR 5.0SC - bought at 3 years/40,000km and sold at 5 years/60,000km, had one or two issues with TPMS, also a faulty headlamp module on the active headlamps which triggered an annoying warning on the dash that looked like a bowl of ramen and made me hungry;
2015 XE 25T - owned 4 years, about 30,000km, I think it had a few conquests for infotainment upgrades but other than that no dramas.
2016 f Type V6 S - owned 4.5 years, about 40,000km on it. No problems at all. Had to replace a wheel bearing recently but I think that was because the service guys forgot to tighten wheel nuts and I drove it with a loose wheel for a week or two (yikes). Also had a creak in the back at one stage due to the bumper rubbing on something, and oil was leaking from a sensor in last year's service;
2020 XE p300 HSE - only has 10,000km on it, no dramas.

I think you'll find the reliability has come on a lot since the S--Type days. Water pump on early models, and plastic coolant pipes failing, but there's plenty of threads about dealing with those. I've only had minor niggles with mine, leaky diff seals and the connector on the fuel pump hadn't been secured properly at the factory leading to some weird codes. Folks on here reckon the '15 is the best model anyway, so go for it!

That's what I had go wrong at 60k on the s-type.

I had a few cars on my list as I decide, such as the alpina B7 and an aston db9 with only 18k miles. I almost bought a DB7 over the s-type back then and now I find myself in the same situation. But man does that jag sound purty! I've just been looking for things with 500+ hp, and there are plenty of relatively cheap options. Then I thought, just buy a hellcat crate motor and drop it in my plymouth.

Well, if you decided to get something more reliable, BMW is absolutely not the way to go. Guaranteed **** show.

I always hear that a lot, but I had a 3-series up to 170k miles and it was the best car I ever had. Only thing I ever replaced on it I think was a bearing at 130k, a window regular, and starter. Most reliable car I ever owned. I nearly bought a 5-series last year but opted to try something different and got an infiniti q50 hybrid as I was driving 70mi to work each day.

So I see the F-type S comes with a manual option, are there any manual R's out there?

And the best in breed! Especially when tuned to 450 hp.

Well, my dream has been scrapped

I was buying a house and after 6 months of headaches, the whole thing fell apart (lazy sellers) and I had to look again during a very tough market. Over the weekend we finally found a great house but was way above what I planned on spending (a difference of more than an f-type at least) but was too great of a property to ignore. So, I'm dumping my car money and then some towards the new property. In the long run it's the better decision, but for now it makes me a sad panda. On the plus side, I won't get cussed out anymore about buying the car. Maybe in a few years...

I bought a 2016 F-Type V6 with 13000 on it. So far - 5 months in - it's been a great car. Best looking car here where I live and sounds great too. Love it!
