Default Radar detectors and heated windshields

The F-type has a heated windshield. I recall when heated windshields were first available that they were not good for radar detector use through them.

Has anyone had any experience using a detector with the F-type?

I have a heated windshield too with a radar detector on it. It does pick up signals, but not sure they've been police radar yet - probably other K band in the area.

Thanks! I'm going to call Escort today and see if they have any information about current heated windshields attenuating the radar signals.

Here's what Escort said:

"That windshield can impact the performance of the detector. Most windshield like that have a space to place a detector or GPS unit that is not blocked. You dealer should have that information."

Any verdict on this topic? How about the black dot area?

Agreed. But I couldn't find a definitive "heated windshield", black dot area, radar detector = NO.
I did find in fact 2 people saying, yea it works OK .....

Heated windshield has nothing to do with it. Model year 2017 and beyond has the infrared attenuating windshield which turns your radar detector into a paper weight.

I was under the impression that the heated windshield (with the embedded wires) didn't have the infrared attenuation. It has both?

Yes it has both.
On the F-Type 2017+ there is no cutout safe space. Unlike my Range Rover where you can see a trapezoid shaped area on the left of the rearview mirror that is not coated (you can see it as the color is not as greenish)

There is a cutout (black areas) but the shape of the headliner makes it impossible to mount a radar detector and still have it pointing forward.

Please be specific or better yet post a picture... I spoke with JLR and there is no cutout like the Range Rover has according to them....

the heated windshield DOES block radar detector and toll-pass devices.

I think the little cutout is only on the F-Pace
on the XF, there are little spaces on the bottom left and right corners that do not have the electric coils....but those are not optimal places for radar detectors.

Ive made a similar post in the past, people responded with good information

This is correct. Small areas by the rear view mirror (as noted in your manual) intended for transponder placement. However as stated, the cutouts are to small for effective windshield mount detectors. Remote radars IMO are the only effective option.

While a remote mount is the way to go for ultimate protection, my Beltronics STI mounted in the cutout provides adequate detections. Last weekend on a winding back road I got a good around the corner detection of a CHP driving in the opposite direction. I definitely had enough time to slow down before he could clock me. In easier terrain like a straight highway it is also works pretty well.

Just out of curiosity, why aren’t you guys mounting remote sensors at the front of the car with the control/alarm panel mounted more discreetly than in the windshield?

Can you please post a picture of what you consider the cutout? Thank you!

Check out this thread. There is a picture as well as some videos of a simple test against a k band sign. You will see that the performance is degraded but it still works.

They are wrong. It's on either side of the rear view mirror.
