Stonsho arrived today.

The instructions say to remove red 3m tape from screw but mine did not have any on it. Is this critical? Where does the tape go if it had it?

Other than that product looks great and should take all of 2 minutes to install.

 

It's not critical. I don't remember any red tape on either of mine.

The red tape covers the sticky tape that is on the mounting block. Clean the underside of the grill before you remove the tape.

 

I had a feeling that's where the tape should be but my mounting block does not have it. I'll contact Mike to see what he suggests. I may be able to get away with using double sided emblem tape I have in the garage.

 

There was no sticky tape on my mounting block, but I think Mike has tweaked the design over time. Perhaps the sticky tape is there to identify the side that mates to the car.

I had an early model ordered an hour after Buick's OP, on which it was easy to mistakenly install the mounting block upside down so that it doesn't latch. It's easy to do that because the release ring is still on the right side. In the version I had, there are two smaller holes on each side that you don't use. They are not drilled all the way through the block, but the mounting block must installed with those two holes facing the ground with the release plunger on the right side.

You don't need sticky tape, it's the screw into the under tray that holds it in place.

 

I assumed that the sticky tape was there to shield the bolt to some extent from vibration which would help keep it from backing out. And if it did happen to back out, the tape would hold the block in place. I've also contemplated using thread locker on the bolt.

 

Like I said, earlier versions had no sticky tape. Perhaps Mike put it on there to keep the block from rotating since there's only 1 center screw holding it in place. I was able to tighten mine enough so that it didn't rotate from side to side, but if someone bumped into it hard enough it would rotate. That happened once and I just centered it, and re-torqued. You also have to be careful not to over-torque that mounting screw and stripping the threads.

However, the down side of sticky tape is mounting at a slightly wrong angle and now the tape is stuck. It's hard to center it perfectly until you have the plate actually mounted.

On my C7 the mounting plate has 2 mounting holes on each side, which match up with 2 OEM fasteners on the under tray. It comes without mounting screws or sticky tape because you simply remove the OEM metal screws and re-use them to attach the mounting block.

The F-Type OEM fastener is soft plastic, which is why Mike supplies a metal screw w/ the F-Type kit.

 

Thanks for all the replies. I spoke with Mashell and she told me there should not be any 3m sticky tape for the F-Type mount.
This means either they sent the wrong mount or the right mount with the wrong instructions - I'll check when I get home from work.

She was super nice and did not hesitate to offer solutions and remedy the situation.

They sent the right mount, wrong directions. Installed last night in under 2 minutes.

 

I was in heavy traffic this morning and in the process of changing lanes when I encountered a large road alligator (truck tire tread). With no room to avoid, I could only square up head on and hope for the least (damage). A similar tread took out the front bumper skin on my wife's MINI a couple years ago. Got to the office and inspected the damage. Front plate gone, plate frame in pieces and retaining pin on Sto N Sho sheared. No damage to the Jag. Ok...so now we know the Sto N Sho protects the car from both aggressive bumper blocks or curbs AND road alligators.

 

Other Waze drivers would have warned you about that tire on the road.

It saved me the other day.
