Default (Stupid) Wheel question

I'm searching the forums but not seeing a clear answer on this..

I'm getting a 2016 F-Type S Coupe next week, and it comes with 18" wheels. I'd really like to go to 20's, so I went to TireRack to get an idea for sizing options.. but TireRack is saying there's no wheels available for the F-Type.

I've always assumed you could move to larger wheels if you keep very close to the tire diameter, and just get thinner sidewalls. Is that incorrect??

I can't even search TireRack's wheels easily if I don't give them a car make and model, so can anyone suggest a website that I could browse good choices for wheels?

Gooday. There are plenty of aftermarket choices or you could look at getting some second hand OEM 20's.

I went from 19's to vorsteneir 21's on Michelin tyres and I was really happy with the result. If you want sizes, there is a build thread that sets them out and another thread where there was a group buy of another brand of forged wheel. I have to say though, the car looks wicked with the vorsteiners, they fill out the wheel arches and have a deep dish. It handles better, too. The result is above.

Essentially you are right. The bigger in diameter the wheel, the less width in the tyre sidewall, so for practical purposes if you put my 21's next to the 19's that I can't get rid of, the week and tyre combination should be the same height.

These are a lot wider as well, but I can never remember exactly. I think it might be 285 fronts and 305 rears.

No true F-Type S ever came with 18" wheels, so either it's a base not an S or it has at least 19" wheels.
The reason is the front brakes - the "base" has 355 mm front brakes and 18" wheels but the S has 380 mm front brakes and the 18" wheels will not fit over those calipers, so the S has 19" wheels as standard and 20" as an option.
I suggest you double check the car your are getting - is it really an S and what wheels does it come with?

There are plenty of options these days, in particular since many of nowedays wheels can be machined to spec (in terms of offset and bolt pattern).
I.e. wheel manufacturers often make wheel designs in a way that leave lots of fitting options open (a "one size fits all" so to say), without car specific pre-machined bolt holes or offset.
Final machining of bolts holes and offset are then only done on order.

20s and larger will make ride harsher, so unless you only drive on perfect roads I would advise against going with bigger rims. I have 19s and wish I could downgrade to 18s for more comfortable ride, but 18s won't clear my calipers.

That really is a personal thing. As many others I do have 20"s, and they do offer me a comfortable enough ride, though Belgian roads are far from perfect,
even more, within Europe our roads have the reputation to be quite bad...

'There are a number of aftermarket wheel options. How much do you want to spend? A set of oem 20's on this forum's member market place can run from $1200 to $1600 or less depending on the seller's desire to sell. You can check that out. Sometimes there is a really good deal on wheels and tires together. Of course you need to add the tire cost if buying just whees.

There is a tire thread on here that is recent that listed a number of options (from Ftype17 if I recall correctly). Start with the budget and go from there. Some further suggestions can then be made.

TireRack indeed does not offer wheels that fit the F-Type.

If it's an S it would have 19s because of the front brakes.
