Default SVR manual available

Just got a notice from British Motor Cars that the SRV now can be ordered with an 8 speed manual. If I had only waited.

Assuming its too late for you to cancel and re-order the MT I'm quite sure you'll [still] be ecstatic about your purchase! Like so many things, the things we buy today are old and/or obsolete tomorrow. That's an exaggeration of course and as much as I might have opted for a MT in my F-Type (and in retrospect, and based on many observations here without modifications, I'm 100% delighted with my Auto) it wasn't available in 15...which would have meant waiting.

And I didn't want to!

Lots of luck.

Care to post that notice? .....I'm a little skeptical on an 8spd manual availability on the F type V8 and wonder if it's a misprint?

Dave.

It looks to me like another example of a media outlet and car dealer not knowing WTH they are talking about.

You'd think there would be a press release from JLR wouldn't you?

Sounds like the childs game of telephone.

First, a misprint, then the entire blogosphere.

Unless it comes from the kittens mouth, I'm not buying it.

I'll join the crowd in calling BS on this. To my knowledge, there's no such product as an 8-speed manual transmission from any of the gearbox companies. The 7-speed Tremec in Porsche 911s and Corvettes has the most gears available today.

For what it's worth, I just drove a C7 Corvette Z51 with the 7-speed yesterday. Frankly, it was no fun at all to drive - poorly matched to the car, and the shift gates were so tightly spaced that I kept downshifting from 7 to 3 instead of 5. Adding another ratio would not have made the car better. A rare case where I'd definitely take the automatic, and this comes from someone who has had precisely 1 automatic equipped vehicle in the last 20+ years.

In a torquey car like the SVR, 6 speeds would be plenty.

Almost certainly an editorial error on the part of the original blog post, perpetuated by others.

LOL . . . you must be very rusty or didn't have much seat time, or both. The Tremec 7MT in the C7 is, bar none, the smoothest, toughest, and best MT on the planet. With auto rev-match on, it is unbelievably smooth, and makes you look like a professional "heel and toe jockey."

Shifts are very short and closely-spaced, but that's what you want in a high-performance car as opposed to a truck. If you move the shifter straight up or straight down whether up- or down-shifting, you'll never miss a shift. It takes a minimum of 1-2 hours of seat time to get used to any manual even if you are a very experienced MT driver.

Just so you know I'm not beating you up, I think I understand why you say what you did above. In the first half-hour of my test drive I did the same thing as you. After an hour, it was the best MT I've ever driven.

In addition, it's essentially a 5-speed, with no need to ever use either 6 or 7 except on long highway cruises. They are both overdrive gears there for fuel economy. 7th gets you over 30 mpg cruising at 70 mph at 1400 rpm. 6th is there for a long climb in highway cruising. Even in a 6-speed, 6th is an overdrive gear.

This.

The whole reason they didn't pair the V8 with a manual is because they didn't want to pay for one that could take the power. There's no way they would spend all the extra money to develop a completely new transmission for a low production volume car. Doing that would have gigantic price implications.

I dunno, I'm kinda with Foosh again... 8sp manual? For what? It would clearly be a case of you've got 7 we've got 8, seems totally like a waste of time when you've got two overdrive gears already. Eight manual speeds seems very counterintuitive, that is to say learning your car and getting a feel for what gear you're in. Seems one would be lost, needing to constantly look at the display to know the current gear, and then the have to overthink to figure out what gear would be best.

Just hate the thought of an 8 sp manual.

Further, think about those of us who live in metro areas dealing with loads of traffic. After a year your right forearm would look like Popeye with the constant shifting out of the short gearing.

God - how I miss my mint, soft yellow /black stripes '71 Chevelle 396 with a Hurst 4 that I sold for $4500 back in '95. (New topic)

Thanks for posting Buckingham, but I'm not convinced it's true.

Cheers,

I wasn't lusting after the 8 speeds but the manual transmission harnessed to 575 horses. 6 speeds from start to 1:1 and a seventh (tall) overdrive gear would be plenty adequate.

And, as I suspect you know the 7MT Tremec is capable of handling at least 650 in the C7 Z06. I think it's actually rated for more.

Another case of jounalists being useless.

There will be no manual V8 Jaguars.

+1. My tuner has put over 900 horses to a 7 speed Tremec. That's is exactly what is needed on the SVR.
