Default 1994 xj6 4.0l valve seals

Was wondering how many valve stem seals are on a 1994 4.0l.Do they use seals on the exhaust valves. Will be replacing seals and would like to know how many to order.Any help will be appreciated.

On the 4.0 litre engine, only the inlet valves have seals.

There are 2 ways to replace the 12 intake valves seals.
You can remove the head (this method is preferred if the gasket is leaking oil near the distributor area so an updated gasket can be installed).

You can remove the intake side head bolts one-at-a-time and install 'spacers' in place of the cam caps, reinstall the bolts tight but not re-torqued to keep the 'clamping force' applied to the head gasket. Then remove the camshaft and followers. (keep them in order)

Rotate the engine (keep the chain tight) to close the exhaust valves and apply air pressure to the cylinder to keep the intake valves closed. Some people have used to 'rope trick' to keep the valves closed.

Then use a lever type valve spring compressor tool to remove the 'keepers' and springs. Replace the seals and re-install the springs. Move to the next cylinder and repeat.

I have written this up a few years ago with a pic of the tool I use but I don't remember when that was??

I see you asked the same question in the Jag Lover's forum and Bryan N stated....

"Your '94 car's engine will certainly have a full set of 24
valve stem seals on both inlet and exhaust.

They were fitted on all valves from engine serial number
E163523 - 1990 MY perhaps? See item 10, EBC3531"

I seem to remember that the newer head gasket sets are supplied with 24 Valve Stem Seals so I believe he is correct but it has been over a decade since I have replaced the stem seals on the AJ6 or AJ16 engine.

I have a head gasket set in my pile-o-parts somewhere so I will see if the little sack has 24 stem seals.

Default 4.0l valve seals

thanks Bob,I thought i had read somewhere that there were seals on the exhaust also.My car sits for 6 to 7 months out of the year.Oil is usually seen dripping from exhaust manifold near center cylinders.took both exhaust manifolds off the other day and can see oil in most of the exhaust ports.took the rocker cover off and can see where the oil pools in the head.will be taking head off.
