Unhappy High fuel consumption on Jaguar X300 Sovereign 4.0

Hi
I have some issues on my 97' X300 Sovereign 4.0
When I start it. it sometimes burn alot of petrol.
I took my car for a spin on Sunday. 30-40km (Here in Norway we use Kilometer) and 1/4 part of the tank was gone.
I filled full tank before driving. I'm pretty kind on the throttle when driving.
Is there any cold start valve on theese cars? I was thinking maybe the valve is broken?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

There list could be long.

1) Blocked air filter
2) MAF going bad, not common.
3) Coolant Temp Sensor (CTS) going bad, more common.
4) Thermostat failed/failing, so engine running cold, despite the dash reading.
5) Old spark plugs.
6) Transmission slipping, low on fluid, in need of a service??.
7) Brakes dragging, main or handbrake??.
8) Fuel pressure regulator (FPR) failed, or the vac hose is missing, not common down here.

I could keep going but wont. There is no one thing usually.

Has this happened all of a sudden??, or has it progressively got worse??.

Has a mechanic recently done "something" and now you notice this condition??.

UPDATE, coz I can.

The fuel gauge may NOT be accurate, surprised, I'm not. Mine did it today, full tank, drove about 15kms, had lunch, nice, restarted, showing less than 3/4, HAHAHA, its a Jag, drive on.

Just for giggles I stopped at the bowser, and topped it off, barely squeezed 2 litres in the thing.

Another "to do" on the list.

All that Grant mentioned needs to be covered first, but if nothing turns up, there is another possibility. The X300 was the first Jag with fully adaptive fueling, and I don't think they had a really good handle on it yet. Some times the ECU gets the fueling out of kilter and the only correction is to wipe it out and start over. I have a '95 XJR, and I have learned a I just have to do that once or twice a year. I have mentioned here before, I know it's time when the fuel mileage goes through the roof. The attached bulletin describes it and how to correct it. Trouble is, it requires an antique piece of equipment and you'll have to hunt for a dealer that still has a PDU working. As yet, I have found no other piece of equipment that can do the reset.

As a side note, I can attest to repairing numerous cars, some of them that would barely run, simply by "Resetting the Adaptive Terms" with a PDU. Nowadays the fuel trims have limits much narrower than the X300 AJ16, and it's not near the problem it once was.

Oh, and some of the cars, mine included, never set any of the codes listed in the bulletin.

Good luck!

When I bought my 1996 Daimler 4 litre it was very heavy n the gas. The OBDII of the fuel trims and the oxygen sensor output voltages made little sense - inconsistent. Changing the oxygen sensors wasn't all that hard, and now she's getting impressive economy of 29.2 miles to the gallon - up from 18 average.
