Most reliable used Jag under $7,000???

Okay, I love both the XJ - style body and the coupe (I own an S-type, so don't want one of those)... so, my question is what's the best Jag I could reasonably find for under $7,000?
I'm hoping to buy one this spring, and enlist one of my more mechanically-inclined buddies to help me restore it.
Here's my guess, but I'll defer to the experts here:
Mid-1990s, 4.0 L, Auto...
Cast a vote for your favorite engine/tranny combo, body style, etc.
Thanks!

Sorry, i can't help ya there. i don't know much about pre-2000 models, leastly the XJ series. Sounds like a good project though, wish ya luck!
XJ for sure, make sure it is inline 6 not a V12 and you should be ok. Bear in mind though the parts can get pricey.
XJS also would make a fine car as long as it is not the V12.

Greetings NewJagger,
You should be able to buy the nicest '97 XJ6 you can find for that kind of money...and the engine and trans are about as close to indestructable as anything Jaguar ever built. You'll still icurr some repair expenses, and FJT is right as always: the coils for that car just jumped above $300 each from the factory. Like everything else, you can keep the expenses in check if you do your homework or find a tech you can trust (I know a guy in Ohio, if you're close).
The other advantage of the X300 ('95-'97 in U.S.) is that alot of mechanicals are shared with earlier XJ40, and alot of body and trim is shared (sometimes with minor adaptation)with XJ8. So you can buy a used hub from a rusted out '93 XJ6, or a hood from a blown up '98, and keep your '97 in good shape forever. My only complaint is the rear wheel arch corrosion, which is why mine has the slightly gaudy stainless trim stuck on. Good hunting!
Sorry, I tried to add a pic but I don't know how to shrink the file size yet.

yeah xj6 all the way.. those coils use to be 150 back in the day .. some parts are pricey.. just gotta watch out for ecm problems and head gasket problems.
The inline 6 XJS convertible is a really nice ride. I like the coupes personally, but I think I'm in the minority there. That inline six will treat you right.

haha Ken you and me both are in the minority. I love the coupes much better. Not a big fan of convertibles on any car really. The coupes keep the contour lines of the car flowing and pull it together much nicer!
