transmission fluid ?
i have a question about what fluid to use. i was wondering if i still need to use the essco transmission fluid for my model # 5hp-24 transmission, i recently had it rebuilt and now getting ready to put it back on, or can i use dextron III, please any info would be great thanks.
im not sure what was used to rebuild it exactly but he the mechanic did say he replaced everything including the drum, im just now wondering if i can in fact use dex iii as oppose to adding essco, any info would be great thanks.
Dexron III isn't really available anymore, but its derivative Dexron VI isn't a very good alternative for the Esso originally specced for the 5HP24. Instead, a suitable commercial alternative is Castrol Multi-vehicle import ATF. Another is Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.
Go to a VW dealer and get the fluid for an 01M or 01V transmission for under $20 per liter (IT IS THE SAME FLUID) I have more than 30 liters of ESSO 71141 from working at the Jaguar dealer for YEARS and I am now installing it in VWs because I repair more Jettas, New Beetles, Passats, etc. with the 01M/V gearboxes than Jaguars and have to put it somewhere!!! When I run out of LT71141 I will put the VW fluid in my 1999 XJ8L 5HP24 every 50K miles. You (as an owner) can put what ever you want into you car, I (as a repair shop) will stand behind my fluid choices and if I choose the wrong one I get a litigation nightmare for things that go wrong!!! Just my opinion but I have never been hauled into court to defend myself.

No lawsuits here either. I have Castrol or Mobil 1 in several 5HP24 and 6HP26 trans now, both customers and my own, with 10s of thousands of miles on them, literally no issues related to fluid choice at all.
I wouldn't recommend Castrol or Mobil 1 to a customer without using it myself. I always give each customer the choice after a good explanation, then the customer makes their own informed decision. I have a couple of customers who still want the Esso and I do suggest they purchase it (for me to change) at VW for the best price.

thx for all the updates on what fluids can be used on the 5h-24, although i have to say i did go with the esso after all, but i got a great deal on it. I found a place that works on imports and the guy let me have it for $10 a quart, thanks again, well apppreciated.

Good that you made a decision that satisfies you. That's the important part.
Esso's LT fluid for the 5HP24 is an old formula developed in the mid 90's. Other brands, compatible with the LT formula are much newer formulas and better IMO.
Even though Esso has an exclusive marketing arrangement with ZF, with the 5HP24 design as old as it is now, there is no excuse for selling LT at some places for as much as $60/$70 qt. But $10/qt. isn't bad

Mobile1 Synthetic ATF and Mobile Mult-Vehicle ATF. Their spec sheets list that they suitable for use in vehicles that specify the Esso LT 71141.

Mobile1 Synthetic ATF at AutoZone is also $7.99 per quart.

Is there a way to decide which one of these two Mobile ATF is the best Alternative to use in place of ESS LT 71141?
I also found Lub Kool Kleen Transmission Cooling Flush at AutoBarn.com 13.25 onces for $8.99 plus $4.95 s&h.

I just sent our Transmission from our 2001 Jaguar XJ8 to the only certified ZF transmission repair shop here in Connecticut for a bench rebuild yesterday. I am hoping to pickup it up next Thursday ($2295 for the rebuild and $550 for the mechanic for the removal and installation of the transmission plus probably at least another $150 for miscellaneous). Maybe we will be only another week before it is back on the road.

I went to AutoZone this morning. The only Mobil ATF product they sell at this local store has Mobil1 Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF label on the 1 qt bottles along with the catalog (part#) 98KB96 stamped on bottle. I had the clerk print the cross-reference OEM Number. The cross-reference for catalog#/Part# comes up with 98HC69 with the product description of Mobil 1.
The Catalog#/Part# on the avlube.com is 98HB92 with the product description of Mobil Mult-Vehicle ATF.
I will call Exxon Mobil Corp Customer Service Tuesday morning to inquire about each of the 3 catalog/part numbers (98KB96, 98HC69, 98HB92) along with a request for their product name and their related specification sheets.
I will post any information I get from them as soon as I get it.

There is a store locator on www.autozone.com
I put in Jacksonville Florida and found 15 store locations in or near Jacksonville. Use this website link and put in Jacksville Florida to get the list of the store locations.

Call your closest local Auto Zone store and ask for Mobil 1 Synthetic Mult-Vehicle ATF (part# on 1 quart bottle is 98KB96 but it is listed on their computer system as part# 98HC69). The price for 1 quart bottle should be $7.99 plus sales tax.

I called Exxon Mobil customer service for more information on these 2 products.
The Mobil 1 Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF is 100% (full) synthetic (part# for 1 liter bottle is 98KB96 and the 6 bottle case is 98HC69 and the 55 gallon drum is 98188E).
Only place I found on the internet for the 6 bottle case was avlube.com:
http://www.avlube.com/mobsynatfdex.html
The Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF is a premium synthetic blend (part# for the 12 bottle case is 98HB92). The 12 bottle case is also at avlube.com:
http://www.avlube.com/momuatf.html
Also ZF authorized dealers (ZF certified transmission rebuilders) sell ZF Lifeguardfluid5 ATF in 1 liter bottles for our jaguar zf 5hp24 transmission. It is probably the same as Esso LT 71141. I do not know what they charge for it. Here is a website that has the information:

I purchased 3) 1 liter bottle of VW transmission Fluid for $19 per bottle at our local VW dealership part department. Part# G-052-162-A2 (same fluid as ESSO LT 71141). Our ZF authorized Transmission Repair Service in CT (50 miles away) charges $20 for the ZF 1 liter ATF bottles - part# ZF LifeguardFluid5.

Hi
For what its worth, I work for a German Engineering company (not a car company) and from what I have learned from the Germans over many years is that they have good engineering reason's why they do things. As a result I always buy genuine parts for my cars and bikes AND use the correct oil, look at it as insurance, anyway I noticed that the www.tsgparts.net seems to have changed to another name but are selling genuine ZF oil at very reasonable prices............check it out. I was looking for oil for my XF's tranny now its done (a pretty hard 50-60,000m), this guy does a kit of genuine parts and oil at a very reasonable price, will see how it works out.
