Default Welding safety?

Somewhat off topic. I need to do some welding, using MIG. Perhaps someone can suggest what is the best inexpensive fire extinguisher to keep around?

Be sure to disconnect both neg and pos terminals of the battery on the vehicle. My bud welded something (I forgot) on his car and took out his CPU amongst other things.

Actually I believe the safest is to disconnect the positive from battery and connect it to the ground. This will short out all impulses that may be generated by welding. Also, the ground lead of the welding should be as close as possible to the welding point to reduce risk of parasite circuits.

Edit: The question was about fire extinguisher. What type of extinguisher does not expire too fast and is effective? CO2?

Probably any small unit that is easily reachable should suffice. CO2 would be a good choice.

I think the shelf life is about 3 - 5 years.
