Default Generic thread "Subjects"?

Am I the only one who gets aggravated at stupid thread "Titles" ?

Titles like: "OMG, WTF" ? "Question" ? "Anyone have this problem" ?

Isn't the point of the subject line to offer a clue to the substance of the post or is it merely to stroke the ego of the poster, so more people read the thread?

With some 200 posts a day, it's nearly impossible to keep up with threads, when it's impossible to separate the "noise" from a subject of interest.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

You're certainly not the only one to make this point.
From the poster's point of view a good title gets good replies and a bad one often very few.
Hopefully that helps emphasise the desirability of brain engagement.

Very good point and I fully agree.

Not only is it a courtesy to others but, if a person is seeking help, the subject line might be the difference is getting the answers he needs....or not.

Speaking for myself (but probably others as well) I gravitate first towards threads where I'm fairly sure I can add something meaningful to the discussion. I use the subject line to decide.

That said, the "Off Topic" area is place where less formality should be expected....and tolerated.

Cheers
DD

In the tech sections, a good thread Title backed up with vehicle details in the Sig or Garage and at least a country for Location grabs attention and makes scanning posts easier for readers.

The benefit to the OP is that these type of posts almost always get a better and more relevant response.

You mean 'My car went Gloop' is not such a good title?

Of course I agree, heck we even wrote how to entitle a thread into the forum guidelines that are sent to every new member and are also included in my signature links.

Go on carzaddict, get it off your chest, spit it out, now is your chance, no names, but we won't hold it against you.

Might even help us to make improvements.

Look for a post earlier today with the title "Question". Yes, really. Then, two pages further in the index is a thread entitled "Repairs".

Accurate, but not very appealing or informative. Selling the sizzle is half the battle in getting good answers.

As far as the use of "WTF" and "OMG" in titles and bodies ... the default action is "NEXT!"

'My car went Gloop' is actually an appropriate title....its descriptive of what the post is about.

A subject i just saw "Anyone else have this issue?!" is absolutely not acceptable....atleast say what the issue is

OMG....what a great thread this is and thanks for starting it BrianL99 !!

Everyone who has posted into this thread has made good / valid points all of which I agree with. I could write into this post and still be here hours later, but unfortunately it is what it is and we just have to deal with it I'm afraid its forum life at its best.

Posts with titles such as these below can be really annoying....
OMG
WTF
Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( more exclamation marks really get your attention )

But, what about......
"Do you prefer the XK8/XKR over the new Aston Martin DB9 in terms of looks, power, speed and performance?????"

Which is worst?

Of course we also have the issue of posts with ttiles such as "My breaks are failing" which I always try to correct when I see them, for everyones sake.

You all make sense, thanks for the comments, however, I fear we will be continuing this thread for many years to come.

Oh, you're probably being vilified by somebody but they haven't actually said anything. Tee hee. Just kidding.

Actually, remarks about improving the quality of postings are always well received by those who don't need to improve the quality of their postings....and never read by those who do. :-)

Thanks Jim. I've always hoped that I'd someday say something that could be called definitive. Now, by golly, my day has come :-)

I won't let it go to my head, though. As we know, all glory is fleeting
