Jaguar solution to keyless start could save lives

Today, The New York Times published an article about a dozen deaths related to drivers leaving their cars running, closing their garages and later succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning. The reason has been identified as "keyless start" features, or proximity entry and push-button start, where owners don't need to physically handle a key or fob to gain entry into the vehicle or start it. It is the latest, and deadliest, issue raised with this system after those related to security and simple inContinue reading Jaguar solution to keyless start could save lives

The Jaguar solution for the XF described in the article goes a long way to explaining why successive models have more and more functions I and many other owners neither want nor need.
In the race to attract buyers, manufacturers must match or surpass the competition or innovate to stand out from the rest. Proximity entry/keyless start is such a solution looking for a problem.
Jaguar engineers have focussed on a reported issue of drivers leaving the vehicle with the engine running and have come up with a complex transmission/brake solution which is not fit for purpose.
A little more scoping the issue before designing the solution would have revealed there are genuine instances where a driver requires to leave a vehicle with the engine running for short periods.
The determining factor controlling shutdown should be occupancy. If other seats are occupied when the driver exits without shutting off the engine then it should remain running. My XK has occupancy sensors for the security system which determine if there is anyone in the vehicle; the front seats have further occupancy sensors to limit deployment of airbags. These sensors could be used to initiate timed shutdown of an unoccupied vehicle.
