69 420G - restoration
#21
It has been a while since I posted the developments on this project. It has taken longer than expected as more rust found and this had to be taken care of. The car is now almost ready to go into the paint booth. I decided to keep the colour to the original black all over.
A question for anyone out there who may know about this: I had a 1969 420. I kept the rims from that which were factory original 15". This current project car is a 1969 420G, but the factory rims are 14". I tried the 15 inchers on the 420G and they fit. The 14 inch centre wheel cap also fits the 15 inch rims. Going a step up, I checked manufacturers and they recommend 205/70/15. I just do not understand how a mid size care like the 420 had 15 inch rims but the bigger sister 420G had 14 inch rims. I thought it might have something to do with changing the gear ratio as the 420G is a much bigger and heavier car but the same engine? For sure I will keep the original 14 inch rims and park them on a shelf.

Going to pay a visit to the shop today to check on status. I was advised first lAyer of base coat was applied yesterday. Will post some pictures. Interior is done including refinishing the woodwork. I will assemble the interior and exterior myself and than pass onto mechanical shop for refurbishing the driveline. I know this is a little backwards but I also have an E Type and Silver Shadow resto going on at same time and funds were getting tighter for this 420g.

These pictures were taken about a week ago. The shop painted the sunroof panel and i went over yesterday to check it out. Liked the shade of black and gave them the go ahead to spray the rest of the car. Going to go today to see it with the first base coat on and will post pictures afterwards.

Hi Lagona. Sorry for the delayed response. There has not been much developments since my last posting. I was tied up with my daughter's wedding, house renovations, and I made it a focus to finish off the E Type, and 3 other cars first. As such, the 420G is painted, waiting to cut the paint and refinish the rims, and than start the reassembly process. I have a thread under the E-type forum for the status on this car's restoration.
