Default Decoding VIN

I have completed a search, including an internet search, and cannot find anything on how to decode the VIN. Is anyone able to assist me?

My VIN is G1D78022BW. On a thread it stated BW stood for Borg Warner Automatic Transmission. 78022 I am going to presume is the assembly/chassis number. What does G1D stand for. I can guess that the G stands for the 420G model and maybe D is for North American or Canadian export. The 1 I am not sure as the same thread which had BW also had 1 and that was for a 420 model not a 420G model.

Thanks.

I've removed your duplicate post in General Tech Help. Please don't multiple post the same question in different forums.

Pre 1978 numbering is nowhere near as informative as the now standard 17 character VIN. All you can tell from your Chassis Number G1D78022BW is:

Prefix GID = Model (420G)
Suffix BW = Transmission (Borg Warner)

RHD = commencing GID 53720
LHD = commencing GID 76961

The early Mark X 3.8 litre just used a numeric string (commencing 300001 for RHD and 3500001 for LHD) with no prefix. The Mark X 4.2 litre prefix is ID.
