Hi, question: I have 420G with damaged engine. Is it possible to put engine from XJ6 4.2 - 1982 complete with gearbox in 420G ?
Hi Zarnca
It will be best is you start your own thread on this forum. What you want to do may be possible but there are a number of issues to be addressed, like a 1982 engine is fuel injected, the 420G is carburetted, and the engine block may have the engine mount fixing points in a different place. Physically, I would expect it all to fit in as the 420G engine compartment is very large.
My idea is to remove injection sistem and keep the original triple carburetors. How different is a 1982 engine?
The 1982 engine is not hugely different, after all it was made on the same machinery as your original engine ! My only doubts centre around the engine mounting points, as these may be different. If they are different, you'd have to make up special brackets, and similarly for the rear mount at the back of the gearbox. Nothing spectacular, just routine engineering. Your inlet manifold and carbs should just bolt onto the 1982 cylinder head. The 1982 cylinder head won't have any drive at the back of the cambox for the rev counter, as it was electronic by then. You also may find the sump casting on the 1982 won't clear the front cross member. Actually this is a steel forging, not a sheet metal fabrication like the XJ6 had, so you may be lucky.
Engine is finally out. If I compare 1968 and 1982 not to much difference. I'm optimistic.. Engine mount on 1968, on 1982 don't exist... And different oil filter...
