Hi all,
Weather was decent today so I did some work on the interior. It's almost done!
The center console is loosely in place and I know it is missing some beading along the bottom where it is close to, or touching, the carpet. My interior kit came with lengths of the material but I cannot figure out where it goes or how it is attached. I saved my old beading but my cryptic notes are not much use 4 years later. The old has a couple of screws still in place and I can see where it was stapled to the wood backing on the upper side panels under the dash, to the right and left of the radio console. To follow the contours of the console it would have had to have been cut to make the bends but my originals are not cut.
Questions are: 1) where does the beading start and stop, what is it attached to (other than the radio console side panels and 3) how is it attached. I'm sure the screws do not go into the metal console. They are two short to penetrate the carpeting and padding over the prop shaft tunnel. They do have cup washers, implying that they may have been visible and the factory wanted them to look nice.
Thanks
Craig
I have an S Type rather than a Mk2 but the beading in mine goes on the top between the side panel and the top flat deck. I had the centre consul out only a couple of weeks ago doing some work. There is no beading at the bottom of the side sections close to the carpet. This side section is held in place with two self tapping screws at the back down by the seat belt eye bolt and there is nothing through the side sections at the front as the front is attached to the radio panel so is very secure. To remove the section you have shown in your photo in mine you have to detach it from the radio consul then remove the two screws by the seat belt eye bolts and the whole section lifts up from the back and slides out.
If you want to keep some part original or close to it, it's worth buying one of the books by Nigel Thorley. They're both called something like 'Original Jaguar Mk2.' They have loads of photos of different parts of the cars.
Finally found a picture with the front seat removed to get a good view. The bead under the console.
It's the bead that runs under the side panels, under side of the console and looks like it tucks under the rear of the console. Likely it screws to something under there.
So.... this picture, assuming it is correct, actually answers most of my questions.
Thanks for all the input!
Forgot to respond about the books! I do have a big collection of Mk2 books and magazine articles. This was an unusual picture and none of my books showed it clearly.
Subtle changes between the Mk2 trim and the S Type. On the S Type there is no lower bead but there is one between the side panel and the flat top.
This is the best photo I have of the S Type trim side on without taking out the seats and taking new ones. I have had to over expose the photo as you could not see the black on black edge.
I'm not sure that all Mk2s had that bead/piping or when they do if it runs under the radio section. I don't remember it on my car. My console is buried behind a load of other parts so I can't check.
My 68 340 has it, it's glued and stapled to the main consol, and just tucks under the removable radio panels, although it may have been glued once, but it stays in place anyway.
