I am re-upholstering a set of front seat recliners. I have new foams (so I am replacing the horsehair) from Limora and covers from John Skinner.
The sitting was fairly straightforward as the foam is moulded. I am fairly pleased with the result.
The backrests however are more complex and I am not entirely sure the best way to approach it. Should I first fit all the foam into the leather first and then fit this as a complete unit to the frame?
I am thinking of glueing the "horseshoe" piece of foam to the leather and the surrounding foam too. After that I am not sure.
Here are the foams.
If anyone has done this themselves I would really appreciate and hints/tips.
"Jagvette" on Youtube is attempting this now if you follow him. Not sure he will be successful but who knows. I am going to use a professional in Wales. The covers are too expensive to screw it up.
I think the cover should slide over the foam and frame as they did at the factory. Otherwise the foam will tear, separate from the leather and become a mess.
He restored a 2.4L and goes into detail how the seats come apart and go back together. He charges a small amount, I think $30/year for access, but it has really helped me.
I also have just started the reupholstering project on our 1960 MK2. But in our case we are sewing up our own custom covers from the old cover patterns. We are making the pleated inserts out of English tweed cloth of herringbone design, The surrounding parts will be leather as original. wish us luck!
