Default Hood Trim Clips

I bought a full car set of trim clips from Welsh. I have been trying to figure out how the clips are supposed to work on the hood center trim. There are holes in the hood surface (slots actually), but on my car, they don't go through the bracing on the underside. Am I missing something?

Show us the clips you have, please. I rebuilt a Mark 2 in the 80s, but its too long ago to remember the clip itself. There was a clip that went through two holes and then you bent the tabs back on the inside. Is that for the two side trims ? Wit this one the clips slid along the chrome trim and you carefully positioned them to go through the pairs of holes. The centre trim I can't remember, but looking at the clip on SNG Barratt website, they are op-riveted into the holes, but this then begs the question as to why have a slot instead of a hole !

Default Hood Trim Clips

Here are two pics of the rear of the hood. From the top, you can see the last two slots that look the same as all the other slots. But when you look at the underside, there are two cross braces that run under the slots, so no way I can see to spread the clips and clamp down the trim.

Hmmn, very good point, I am trying to find my old trims to see what they were fixed with in that position, I have a new fixings kit and that doesn't help me either.

I will find where I put the trims and come back.

If you try ebay .co.uk, you will find them offered on item 361819480148. They give the part number as BD4919/13. Relatively cheap!!

When I re-built my Daimler V8, they were a pain to install! Mine were simple screws with the appropriate nut and washer - it was difficult to turn the nut without the bolt revolving also. The above parts appear to have a shaped head that perhaps overcome the rotation problem. Nevertheless once the fittings are threaded into the chrome moulding, you need to locate the first bolt add the nut a few turns and then progress to the next and so on until all bolts are located with a nut, then gradually tighten and align the trim.

One of the fun things about the MK2 is the chrome clips. When I took my old chrome off there were a number of different type clips. I got the clip kit from SNG Barratt and it is a bag with different clips. Of course I didn’t keep good notes so figuring out which clip goes where will be trial and error. The front hood clips are easier as they are double pin that go in the holes as shown in the picture. However, the fun part that you are experiencing is that there may be different clips that work together to hold down a particular piece. For the hood, perhaps the clip on the windshield end of the trim is held on with a nut, not a folding pin.
Do you have anything like that.

Yes, I bought one of those kits, but the problem is that there is no access from behind the slots at the rear two positions for the center hood trim.

some of the clips I removed go in at an angle, and when you twist them they are straight and hold to the body- then the trim can be clipped to them.

I see you point about no access, so perhaps it is something like that.

I'm convinced that there is a better way to attach the chrome bits than the factory clips. And since heard a few "Ting, ting" noises as I drove our car home the day we took possession I know we are missing many. Thankfully I had the presence of mind to pull over. The 2 chrome strips on the hood (bonnet) were coming loose! I removed the strips before they fell off and laid them in the back seat.

Default A bit of progress.

I decided that the only way to resolve this (partially) would be to drill through from the top at the rearmost clip position. This would enable me to pull the trim down into its proper position, but I still have not decided what to do about the second from rear position as this also is hidden under the cross beam. By the way, the clips from Welsh Jag are too big to fit the slots in both my MK2 hoods. I had to carefully grind down each clip to shorten it to the length of the slot, and narrow the tangs so that they would go through the slot.

Default Door Trim Clips.

These are the door side trim clips that came in the Welsh Jag Kit. They are a completely different design from the ones that came off of the car, and do seem to work very well. I had to squeeze the trim a little to get it to clip on nicely, but so far so good.

Are those slots in the doors ? They are normally just holes

I have not had time to find my old trims, they must be supplying the wrong type of clip for the bonnet, I will have the same issue if I can't find what clips went in they originally.

Default Slots

They are slots on all 4 doors. I have a 62 as well, and they are slots also. You may be thinking of the holes along the top of the door.

They are holes on my 67 340 are just holes, I haven't taken the trims off the 65 yet.

Does that answer the question re the bonnet, should there be riveted clips the same as the doors for those blind slots then ?
