Lucas voltmeter
I just purchased one from Rogers Motors on EBay. Just look them up there. They will supply the full "V" bezel to match the bezels on our cars, and it can be ordered in black. The only problem I ran into is that the bezel doesn't match our black bezel. It is too glossy. I took it apart and painted the bezel satin black - still too shiny. It then scuffed it up and repainted flat black - not shiny enough! Finally, I just took the bezel off of the ammeter and fit it to the new voltmeter and now all is well. Getting the black full "V" bezel was an extra $15.00. It comes standard with chrome. If you do what I did, save your extra $15.
The original instruments are in a metal casing. The new voltmeter is plastic. The bezel on the ammeter rotates and then slips off when the bezel tabs line up with slots in the casing. On the plastic casing you have to carefully bend up the bezel tabs and after installing on the plastic casing bend them down to grip the plastic. On the plastic casing there are no slots for alignment.
Just sayin.
If you go with the chrome bezel, Moss Motors and a number of the other popular vendors sell it. The one I got from Rogers Motors was produced by Caerbont, in Whales I believe.
Good luck.

I reupholstered the center console in leather and added two black digital volt meters so I can know the exact amps of my dual battery set up and left all of the stock dash gauges in place; it looks clean and unless you are a Jaguar freak you would never think they were not stock. To me stock volt meters are kind of useless as you cannot know the real voltage you just get an indication it is charging or not.
The Smiths gauge works, indeed :-)
Here is a picture of my Mk2 dashboard with the Smith Voltmeter in place.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I've got the same A/C vent set up as you do, and have a question.
I haven't figured out what needs to be removed to be able to drop the instrument panel down far enough to, for example, swap out the ammeter. Can you provide any insights on this?
Thanks.

Dean,
Good question :-)
- First remove the wood strip off the "newspaper shelf". Two nuts, one on each side. You will need to remove the underdash panels to access them.
- Once the wood strip is removed, you can then pull the vents and their hoses enough to lower the instrument panel, as it is no longer blocked by the vents but by the flexible hoses only. Don't pull them too much or they will disconnect from the A/C.
Best,
JP
