Default Mk2 Crankshaft removal and refitting

Could anyone tell me the best way to refit the crankshaft and oil pump gear in a Mk2 3.8. I followed the manual in removing it, took off the oil pump gear and lifted up the oil pump drive shaft and there seemed just enough clearance to get the crankshaft out. But how do you refit it? It seems very difficult to locate the oil pump gear against the drive gear on the crankshaft and then push the oil pump drive shaft down through the pump gear. Seems much too tight a fit on the shaft to do that?
