Default Problems starting car

Hi
I have a MkII, late model 2.4 car with Solex carbs. I have had problems getting the car started for a month or so now (I haven't had much time to look at it recently). I have started tinkering with it and now it almost starts but does not quite catch. I started with the basics and replaced the HT leads, and coil and this improved things somewhat. Today I looked at the carbs (took me a while as I had to go out and buy a 5/16th spanner). The carb float chambers were filthy as was the fuel bottle. I found that there was no filter in so I have changed that and cleaned it out. Upon taking the carb apart I can see that the float nearest the bulkhead has fuel inside? I left it out and tried to find a hole but could not. Is this normal or should I replace the float? I have cleaned all the jets but there did not appear to be a blockage. Also does anyone have any tips on how to turn the engine to get it to TDC? The fan belt approach did not work and my socket cannot fit onto the nut as it bumps into the radiator, is it normal to just use a large spanner?

Thanks
Adrian

Default Car started

I cleaned out the jets again and changed all the plugs over and today the car started, it did take about 20 minutes of coaxing though. I left the engine running for 20 minutes to clear everything out.
As a note for other members I spoke to SNGBarratt and tried to order the gasket kit for the solex and they are no longer manufactured. The service kit is also not manufactured any more. If anyone has any spares that they do not need I'll gladly purchase them from you, my gaskets are OK but I would have replaced them as a matter of course. Does anyone have any other stores where I can get spares?
Thanks
Adrian

Can you post in the forum for the modern S-type, please, this one is for the old S-type of the 60s, a totally different car

Being a Datsun enthusiast before my 3.8s I can share that the Solex carbs are used in Datsun's and a good shop I would recommend to send them to be rebuilt is Datsun Spirit www.datsunspirit.com Often like these Jaguars all that is needed is the get the Solex carbs rebuilt and it is very important to get someone like Datsun Spirit whom rebuilds them daily as often others sand blast and do other bad techniques that will ruin the carbs forever. Once they are rebuilt get one of the syching tools to make sure the multiple carbs are in sych and you will find it starts and runs so much better. Datsun 240z cars use dual Solex carbs and they are very reliable once rebuilt and syched...

Also if you happen to have a good Datsun mechanic nearby you will find that they can tune the multiple Solex carbs of the Jaguar as all older Datsun's used the same carbs in a dual carb set up, no need to rely on a Jag mechanic.
