Default What is this God-awful grindnig noise from the right front of my Mark 1 ?

My 1959 Mark 1 starts to make a very disturbing grinding noise emanating from the right front side of the car ( front wheel area) after I've been driving it for about 15 - 20 minutes. No grinding when first starting up and driving for short period. This grinding has always been present since I acquired the car about 3 years ago, but has been down on my list of things / issues that needed fixing. Car has disc brakes,BTW. I can only hear the grinding when coasting to a stop as the engine noise is so pervasive at normal speeds. No noise when just standing still revving the engine. No noise associated with applying the brakes and the brake is not locked up. I'm naturally thinking wheel bearing but have checked the outer wheel bearing - plenty of grease and adjusted properly. Disc brakes have just a slight sound when turning the drum with the wheel off. So... is the inner wheel bearing now the only suspect ? To check / replace this bearing my service manual wants to have me remove the disc brake calliper and pull the entire hub off - not sure this is within my mechanical abilities but will attempt if this is only remaining culprit. Any tricks to getting the caliper off / back on greatly appreciated !

I would suggest wheel bearing, warped disc, or if your car still has the shields on the front discs, the shield may be bent and rubbing against the disc. I'd start with the last and work back.

Thanks for your thoughts Peter ! I'm not sure what you mean by the "shield" on the disc. Looking at my parts diagrams... just scratching my head.

as previously mentioned, classic wheel bearing symptoms. ...recently had to replace both rears on my '67 MK2.

a bad wheel bearing will usually need replacing within a short time after symptoms first appear. but if the car is not driven very far... it may not require replacing for years.

On later Mk2, S and 420 cars, there was some pieces of bent sheet tin added to keep dust and grit off the disc in order to reduce wear. It's items 14 and 15 in the figure in the link below. Even when the shield was originally fitted, it's often been lost. It can become bent or get stones trapped behind, either of which may produce grinding noises.

a kind of "roar" is always a wheel bearing.
Driving the car without verifying the noise, is dangerous because if it is the wheel bearing, it can "freeze" during driving, making more problems.
Replace them on both front hubs, don't just replace one side. And pack them good with a better grease.
