The engine number is as you have it in the photo stamped into the casing above the oil filter housing. Some engines also repeated this number on the head. It could be found in what is commonly known as the valley which is the area immediately in front of the last spark plug hole. If you look over the top of the coil between the two alloy cam covers the number should be found. Don't worry if the number is not there as later engines omitted this number. My 1967 built S Type engine does not have the number in the head. If the head you are using does not have it's original number don't worry about it as then no one accept you (and all of us) will know the head has been changed.

OK, so heres the donor engine, and i found a stamp in the valley...
Yep LB 4230-9 will be the engine number of the donor which indicates it is also a 9:1 compression engine. I would like to say that that number should be repeated over the top of the oil filter stamped into the block. Maybe some scrubbing with a wire brush will reveal it as the block does appear to have a thick coat of paint on it.

Ill try that this weekend, ive got a wire brush on my angle grinder, good to know my block and donor are the same compression too.
The prefix RA indicates a 3.8 E type engine number. LB is a 3.8 Mk2 number.
So thats good news too - means its pretty much the same engine that would have been in my car from the get go - as ordering hoses and belts is dependant on car commission numbers and if my engine didnt match... id be screwed.

Compression is controlled by the pistons. It's possible to have a stamping showing 9:1 compression and have 8:1 pistons put in after a rebuild. Block and head are identical for all compression ratios, the only difference is the height of the dome on the pistons.

previous owner did fit performance pistons (quite bulged)
