Default '02 XJR 100 Engine Light stays on

Hi. I replaced both low beam headlamp bulbs with Sylvania H7 after one low beam went out. Engine light came on after driving a while. Disconnected battery ground for 20 minutes, unscrewed gas cap, still on. Car is stored inside, naturally, and has 42k miles. Any suggestions on getting engine light off? All accessories seem to work fine.
Thanks

Welcome to the forums Pete's Jag,

The engine light (MIL / CEL) illuminates with certain error codes. Get the codes read and post the actual codes (not any descriptions you may be given) back here for a decode. Guessing is NOT the way to go.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/ to the XK8/XKR forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. You can also use the US Mid Atlantic Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-mid-atlantic-65/ to find other members in your region.

Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.

Enjoy the forums.

Thanks, Graham. I have been reading the posts and trying to follow all rules for new members. Still getting used to this! Any suggestions as to how to get error codes read would be appreciated. Complicated as I dont want to drive the car with engine light illuminated.

Peter,

The MIL only illuminates with a subset of the more serious codes so you really want to know what has triggered it. However, in circumstances where damage to engine or transmission is possible, the engine would drop into 'restricted' performance' or the transmission into 'limp home mode' with a message displayed so the MIL alone is not as critical.

I understand AutoZone do free code reads. If you go there, be sure to ask for the actual codes. They will use generic decode tables which can often be very misleading with a Jaguar.
