Never trust a Jaguar temperature gauge. They haven't made one yet that's accurate.

Get used to the position for "normal" on the gauge and if it begins to climb, stop and investigate without delay. Moving over to reading hot means it's already seriously overheated. On nearly all my 70's and 80's Jaguars, straight sixes and V12, the normal position was about a quarter of the way across the gauge. It would take bursting a cooling hose to move it to hot!
Their temperature gauges got even worse in the late nineties - deliberately set to read normal unless practically boiling. Many a V8 owner has had a ruined engine because of this.
