Default Replacing Rear Brake Pads

For a 2015 XK, do I need to do anything special with the Electric Parking Brake, other than the re-calibration after replacing the rear pads? (I thought I saw a procedure somewhere requiring releasing EPB tension by hooking up some Jaguar jumpers to the parking brake electronics behind the rear seat.)

I didn't do anything with our earlier 4.2 model except change the pads in the normal way and then go through the recalibration procedure. If the rear pads are the same as ours you will need an unusual sized piston wind-in tool with 20mm between the locating pins.

Just make sure that the E-brake is OFF before you do anything.

I'm in the midst of replacing the rear rotors/pads in my 2010 xkr right now, and I used the e-brake release function via my neighbor's Autel OBD tool. This is the first time I've ever had to deal with an electric e-brake so I'm not sure if there's a procedure outside of using an OBD tool in order to perform the release/Off.

Just don't SET the brake. That way it's off. Off is the same as Released. I've done it a few times on XKs.

It's weird. When I pulled the Jag into my garage, I definitely didn't set the e-brake on. But when we ran the release function in the OBD tool, there were distinct noises coming from the rear brake area. It sounded like metal clacking and pressure being released. Maybe it actually didn't "release" anything (since, as you suggest, it wasn't really in the On position), but the car electronics just going through the release procedure always makes those noises.

It sure wouldn't HURT to 'release' the brakes with fancy gadgets, I just don't see the point. I changed the rotors for new also and had zero problems.

Good to know that an OBD tool is not needed. Thx

Unrelated thought... Am I the only person that has to take an extra second to think whether those tools are OBD or ODB?? After spending the last 20 years in technology roles, I always want to type 'ODB', like DB, for Data Base.

Am I the only one?

Anyone??

Dammit. ADD sucks.

I dunno about 2015 units, but on my 2009 with the separate E-brake I had to rotate the piston clockwise to move it back into the caliper (as it moves out as the rotor wears) - there a two holes in the piston for a tool to fit in to rotate it.

See post #2 for the non-standard spacing of the two holes. Hopefully it will be the pads that wear rather than the rotor. 😉

Yes, you're the only one. You must be lysdexic.
On Board Diagnostics.

Oh, believe me, I know what it stands for. It's just my brain doesn't want to accept it. 🤔😎

Thanks all. My wife's Mazda CX-30 has an "EPB Service Mode" which you put the car into before working on the Rear Brakes. Further investigation reveals the CX-30 EPB is located on each rear caliper (a small motor and associated electronics) and does require this mode to prevent damage. Looks like the Jag EPB mechanism is actually a centrally located device with a cable running to each caliper. Again, thanks!
