Default 1999 xj8 or 2002 s-type?

Looking to buy my first jag , can't decide between a 99 xj8 Or a 02 s-type with a 4.0 , any suggestions? Looking for the most reliable out of the two (was going to change the timing chain and tensioners, guides etc to metal components as soon as I get either ) but mainly looking to daily drive but still be able to have a bit of fun when i want, thanks , any suggestions/advice would be appreciated

Welcome to the forum Jdm,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

To a great extent reliability will depend on how well the vehicle has been maintained by the PO's. The S-Type is technically more advanced than the XJ8 but either will give you a lot of fun. If you aren't especially favouring the design of one model over the other then buy on individual condition and history. A well maintained Jaguar is a pleasure to own but a neglected example can be a money pit.

Follow this link XJ XJ8 / XJR ( X308 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 forum and this one S-Type / S type R Supercharged V8 ( X200 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the S-Type forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top of each is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

You can also visit the Canada Region forum by following this link Canada - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

Enjoy the forums.

Is there anything you guys would specifically look for other than what the sticky forum linked above covers? I can't imagine a dealership will like me climbing under the car and taking the dust pan off etc , the s type I'm looking at comes safetied and etested (with warren ties for extra $) but has 175xxxkm , are the timing chain tensioners known to be as bad in these as the xj series? ( I'd figure so considering they both have the same engine ) thanks !

Since you mentioned kilometers, safetied and etested, I'm guessing you're in Ontario. Beware of corrosion if the car has been driven year round.

You'd be better off asking tech questions in the dedicated tech section, not here.
