I'm from Chesterfield, VA and I'm new to the forum and to Jaguar. As a matter of fact I'm looking at purchasing my first one. Not knowing a lot about Jaguar I feel joining this forum will be very helpful.
Just like every car there are thousands of reviews that can be read. I need help from you guys, the experts.
The car I'm looking at is a 2002 X-Type 3.0 with 98,000 miles for $2500. Plan on 80% in town driving. Other than the typical things to look for when buying a used car, is there anything special with the X-Type? Can I give it serious consideration or should I turn and run? Not from Jaguar, but this model LOL.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

X-Type owning members will give you plenty of model specific advice but a general rule for used Jaguar purchase is:

1. history - a complete service and repair record backed up with receipts is the ideal
2. keys/remotes - the number one question new buyers ask is how to replace missing or broken keys/fobs. The answer is it can be frighteningly expensive
3. trim - Jaguar plastic is equivalent to gold. Anything missing or broken needs to be factored into the purchase price.

I hope it checks out and you are soon an owner but, if in doubt, walk away.

Listen to the engine run, you want no strange knockings or tickings. Slowly accelerate and feel for vibrations either from the motor or transmission. Make sure it shifts quickly and surely. Check the fluids make sure the oil is not black and thick. Transmission fluid doesn't smell bad.

Welcome, Mike! Know that you will be putting in a good amount of work/money on these cars as they are over 16 years old. It really depends on how well the car was taken care of. Check the windows as the window regulator was a common item which always broke because of a plastic part which broke after few years of use. I think there were issues with door lock issues as well.
Other common issues was vacuum leaks.

I gave up on my 2002 S-type with 90K miles, as there was issue even my mechanic couldn't identify like the battery drain and my transmission was going. I sold it for less than $2K as the person who bought it would have to put over 3K in repairs. It was in very clean condition and the engine ran well, suspension was solid, I probably put about $800-1,500 into the car every year with minor repairs.

The S-type and X-type shared some of the same parts but not all. The 3 liter I think was a bit more reliable, pre 2003. You are better off with an X-type which is a newer model as you can probably get it for about the same price.

Bottom line know that these are not cheap to maintain and repair, unless you are handy with car repairs.

If this is your daily driver, you're probably better with a newer model, lower mileage or a Japanese car.
