98 XJ8 engine control unit
Hello, I am working on a 98 XJ8 for a friend. It was running great and the next morning it would crank but not fire. I've checked all the fuses that control coil pacs and fuel injection. All are good. Plugged my code reader in and got a P1000 code, indicating a faulty Engine Control Unit. The reader also said it couldn't complete testing.
Have looked on ebay and see many ECU's with the same part number as this one. Will these work without reprogramming from the dealer?
Are the ECU's on this model known to fail or should I be looking elsewhere, like maybe the crank position sensor?

Welcome to the forum OCG304655,
DTC P1000 does NOT indicate a faulty ECM on a Jaguar. It is the code for OnBoard Tests not completed since last memory clear. You will always see either P1000 for tests not completed or P1111 for test completed.
Follow this link XJ ( X308 ) XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 section for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

One welcome and this is in the wrong section for tech help. But here. P1000 and (P1111) is/are a "readiness" codes or lack there of. Not a ecu failure. Did you check fuel pressure? A bad fuel pump is morelike for a crank no start than a crank sensor. But that would be next to look closer at
Lots of correct and excellent advice is give above. There is a schrader valve on the fuel injector rail. If you do not get a strong squirt of fuel when you depress it after cranking you probably have a failed fuel pump.
