Default Bad Start

Hi Jim and all

I just purchased my first Jaguar on 7.23.13,a 02,S type,6cyl,4 dr.,with 92082 mi. from
a well known Nisson dealer.

On the way home in my treasure, I noticed the check engine light was on and the next morning, I had to call AAA to start it .

The dealer put in a new battery, but the light stayed on and after three scans[codes p0420 and p0430]Ba,
the diagnosis was two plugged cat converters. The dealer said to ignore it.

Next, I took a two hour trip and it slowed to a crawl in heavy traffic and almost stopped. A light came on announcing a gearbox fault. I can't set the clock, one of the windshield washers does not work, and as I drove it to mail my first payment, one of the main headlights went out
.

I'm getting a bad start in the Jaguar world! Help! Please advise on what to do and what it needs. I am broke as a dog from buying it.

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum lelamitie,

Good to have you here with us at Jaguar forums. You're not getting the best introduction to Jaguar ownership. The P0420 and P0430 codes is usually an issue with HO2 sensors.

Follow this link S-Type / S type R Supercharged V8 - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the S-Type section for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Southern MidWest Region section by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/southern-midwest-ar-la-ms-ky-tn-al-67/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forum.

Welcome to the forum!

As Graham said, those codes point to HO2 (Hot O2) sensors, not so much to blocked cats.

The workshop manual says for P0420 & P0430;

HO2 Sensor disconnected
HO2 Sensor to ECM wiring fault
HO2 Sensor heater to ECM wiring fault
HO2 Sensor heater failure
Upstream HO2 Sensor failure
Downstream HO2 Sensor failure
Catalyst failure

In that order, so blocked cats is the least likely issue. HO2 sensors are relatively cheap, new cats are not.

Both codes means the fault lies on both banks of the engine, pretty unusual, get a mechanic to check the HO2 sensors and the wiring.

Gearbox Fault message should also have left a code. Depending on that code it could be anything from a failing battery (yes, seriously) to something like the wiring plug on the side of the gearbox coming loose. Don't assume the worst.

Windscreen washer probably just needs a sewing pin pushed down the jets to clear them out.

And the headlight...well even Rolls Royce's have been know to blow a headlight bulb when they get to be 13 years old...

Good luck!
