Default Changed oil 2011 XKR and only took 6.5 quarts

I bought a 2011 XKR Conv in August last, Status Grey with 58k. Live in Tampa Florida and this is my first Jag. I have totally loved it. I have been a hard core motorcyclist forever and this has been a fun diversion.
I changed the oil yesterday Castrol Pro 0 20W but only extracted 5 quarts. The car was on a little slant sideways and then leveled it out and it took out only a couple extra ounces. WE put back in 5 quarts, and checked the gauge and it said to add a guart and we did. We ended up putting in 6.5 quarts but was surprised and a little worried. It has been 8k since last oil change and the oil level has always been perfect it read ok. Any ideas or suggestions.

Welcome to the forum Aprilia2012,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

I can see you've already found your way to the X150 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
That is the place to as your technical questions.

Having the vehilcle level is absolutely critical to an accurate oil level reading. Even a few degress elevation front to rear or side to side makes a difference. You should add detail on whether you checked the level BEFORE draining and that, after the drain and refill, you ran the engine up to temperature, stopped it and gave five minutes for the level to stabilise before checking. Top-up should be done with the ignition ON so the electronic dipstick can register and show the rising level.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Do I need to worry about having added 1.5 gt more than I took out even though the inside gauge says OK?

That's why I asked in post #4 whether you had checked the level BEFORE draining.

An engine oil refill and filter change should take 15.3 US pints / 7.25 litres.

If you KNOW it was to the correct level BEFORE draining the you do need to be concerned at adding an additional 1.5 qt because there could be a level sensor fault.

If you DIDN'T CHECK, then it was probably just low and now it's correct.

It was not at first. We jacked up the low side. we only did it by the eye,not a level and then raised the rear a little also on the low side but only got a short dribble more. But it showed a 1/2 Gt low about 5 mos ago and I added it and it showed OK. So I assumed the sensor is/was good. The sensor said this Sat, to add one Qt and then 10 mins later told me to add .05 Qt. (which made 6.5 Gts in) I checked it the next morning and it showed full. So is there a way of checking that sensor? I figured if it was low it would have flagged me. Just nervous!
I found out when we were replacing the air filter that I needed wheel hub bearings and brakes and rotors. That goes down next weekend.

Dennis,

I haven't had any issues with checking oil level on my XK but my garage floor is absolutely level.

When you only drained 5 qrts, I think it's been low and sounds like you're at the correct level now. I detest the lack of a dipstick on the 5.0 litre engine and Jaguar don't have the best reputation for sensor accuracy!

Can't recall posts about faulty oil level sensor but it's worth posting the question in XK/XKR forum.

Hub bearings, brakes and rotors - that's going to be a busy and expensive weekend.

Graham
