Default Chi-Town Newbie '86 XJ12 Valve Cover?

I just recently purchased a 1986 XJ12 with 76k miles. The previous owner had purchased new valve cover gaskets but didn't install them because he said it was too involved. Does anyone have any pointers for installing new valve cover gaskets?
This XJ needs quite a bit of work so I will be needing advice as I go along, any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome Nick, looks like you have a bigger issue than just the valve cover gaskets. Hope you can get through it.

Thank you all. Yes, it does have many problems that I have to tackle. I am learning the engineering on this car is way different than any other car I have ever owned!

Another welcome here Nick, valve covers shouldn't be too difficult, and I hope the guys in the XJS section can guide you along.

One thing at a time...don't overwhelm yourself with the entire list. Enjoy the forums!

OMG! This thing is a mechanical nightmare! It uses a lot of coolant and brake fluid but the brakes work fine, WTF! The XJS forum has been helping but this is just strange. I am starting to have second thoughts about this car.
