Default Engine Number Identification

Hello Gentlemen
I am new to this forum and I could use your expert knowledge. I have just purchased a 1988 XJS 12. The previous owner said it has a replacement engine. Not sure which year it came from.
Here is the engine number...
8S74625SB
Can anyone help me in identifying it? Which year is the engine.
Your help is much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum svocal,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

The build date of later Jaguar engines starting with the V8 can be identified to the minute but earlier power units were simply numbered sequentially. The SA and SB suffix indicates a 9:1 CR V12 unit from 1971-79 so it looks like an earlier engine has been fitted to your XJS.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xjs-x27-32/ to the XJS forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Western Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-western-38/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Thanks so much for the quick reply. It is most appreciated. You stated the SB suffix indicates it is from a 71-79.
Where can I find that info?

Thanks again

Welcome,

Not wanting to disagree with GGG, God forbid, but,

My V12 chart lists 8S18001 onwards as a V12 5.3ltr, of the HE specification

The SB is listed as :

S = Standard Comp. 1982 (late) to about 1988ish, 12.5:1 Comp for UK, Aust, etc market, and 11.5:1 Comp for the USA market.

B = B spec piston/liner combination.

My list does not give me any idea where your engine sits in the year of things, but definately a late engine before the Marelli change in 1989.

I took that from a note I made the last time I read a similar question and I thought the source was a Jaguar Heritage publication.

However, Grant is a V12 fanatic and his knowledge/information is likely to be the more reliable.

You guys are awesome!!!!.Thanks so much for the warm welcomes and the quick responses. Gee...I sure wish my ex's were warm and responsive as you members. lol.
So with both of Grant's and Graham's responses, Is it safe to say that the engine i have is pre 1989?

Thanks again
