Default Hello bought my first Jaguar today

hello all. I came across a 1990 XJ6 with 186,000 miles for $650 bucks today. Body is in good shape and there is some interior work that needs done. Mostly a torn driver seat and missing passenger carpet. The car had a dead battery and after giving it a boost I was able to drive it home. The engine sounded great and it had good power.

After the the short drive the car wouldn’t start again and the interior lights were dim. The car was able to start again while jumping and idled strongly. I noticed the following issues, 1. The trunk won’t open. Seller told me it opened with the button in glove box but did not. 2. Rear lights are not working although break lights and hazards are fine. 3. Interior dash board lights are not working although dash warning lights, (gas, battery, “lighting bolt?” Etc stay lit.

what this appears to me is that I need a new battery, and my guess is there is a fuse out somewhere. Any ideas on the trunk?

Welcome to the forum Jim,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums. A new battery sounds like your first purchase.

Jaguar badged so many different models as XJ6, we use the factory codes to distinguish between them. The 1986-94 XJ6 is therefore also known as XJ40.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj40-xj81-25/ to the XJ40 forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Northwest Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-northwest-64/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

If the body is good, how is the paint?

Hello, Jim,
Congratulations on your First Jaguar!
It sounds like you're in for some Bonding time with your car. That's what happens when you pick up a less-than-new car with "problems." I can tell you how I know that.

On the other hand, it would be Very unusual to find a 28 year old car of any kind that didn't have some problems, as there's a reason people sell their cars, often more than one.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.
