Hello from Colorado
I am not a Jaguar owner quite yet, but am very close. I would like some experienced opinions before I pull the trigger. I am looking at a 1998 XJR with 158,000 miles on it. The ABS light is on but that appears to be not a big deal from what I've read. My question is, could a XJR make it to 158,000 without the cam chain tensioners etc being replaced? What else should I look for to avoid buying a problem. The price is very reasonable. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Ilikejags,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.
It could ....... but if you do buy it and there isn't absolute proof the tensioners have been done, it should be the first check. That being said, I wouldn't let it needing to be done put me off an otherwise good vehicle.
Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj-xj8-xjr-x308-27/ to the X308 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Welcome. Possible, but unlikely. I bet they've been changed already and if its at 158K miles, there's probably been a lot more already done to it to keep it on the road. If it hasn't, then its a ticking time bomb that NEEDS a lot done to it right away. To avoid buying a problem Jaguar, it is imperative to buy one with maintenance records showing that it was fastidiously cared for. But before you jump in a high mileage Jag with no records (like diving head first into murky water), one thing about Jaguars to consider is that the kind of people who bought Jaguars new were seldom the kind of people who only had one car and drove it every day like it was an Accord. Often the original owners were executives who had a company car, a Ford Taurus or such that they commuted in, and the Jaguar was just for taking the wife out to dinner and non work-related trips. I.e. you ought to be able to find an X308 XJR with much lower miles and the price difference may be a lot less than a full 100K mile service or even one serious unexpected repair bill at indy shop rates. Good luck on your hunt.
