Default Hello, I知 a new member.

I just bought a 2001 Jag XK8 convertible. I致e read about tensioner and timing chain problems. Not sure if mine will be a problem. It only has 11,800 miles on it and my question is: should I worry about these potential problems?

I did the secondaries within a few days after I bought my xj8 about 8 years ago and just recently did the primaries after the engine started to leak oil from basically everywhere. The secondaries were both cracked at 11 years and 80K miles, but the primaries were still fine today even at 120K miles and 19 years. The secondaries see several orders magnitude more stress than the primaries. Secondaries have a high risk/low cost while the primaries have a high cost/low risk. I replaced the primaries anyway while I had the motor out even tho they looked fine. The chain guides were in worse shape tho with some hairline cracks starting to form on three out of four so those are really more a worry than the primary tensioners. We've seen pictures posted of chain guides with chunks missing so finding only a few cracks was a positive. With your ultra low mileage tho, if it were mine, I'd be inclined to just do the same again, secondaries now and wait on the primaries till maybe 40 or 50K or the front main seal starts leaking whichever comes first.

Welcome to the Forums.

If it were mine, I would want to know what top units are there, sleepless nights are not good. As said, the loweer, not critical in any way.

Water pump etc, simple service items, age related.

Good luck.
