97 VDP (in US) was the last of the X300 with an 4.0L in-line 6. Its arguably one of the best engines Jag built - in recent times anyway. I own a 2001 XJR but my aunt has a 97 XJ6. Aside from minor cosmetic things, the only major issue she had was transmission saying good by at 78k miles. I always recommend spending a few $$ on a pre purchase inspection by a jaguar specialist. Look for service records, number of owners - having too many is a concern. Check for previous body work, repair. You can get more info by going over to the X300 section on the forum. If the car checks out and the price is right I would suggest getting it. Eventhough I drive a V8, I have a special place in my heart for the in-line 6.
