Default Howdy from Sth Australia - XJ6 S1

I've been on this forum about a year now, but I only just noticed the New Member area today. I thought I better introduce myself, better late than never

I'm Mike, live in Adelaide, Australia. I have a 69-70 Series 1 XJ6, that I've had for almost about 10 years now. It's been in the family since the early 80's. I took it over in about 2005.

I'm still gradually getting things done to the old girl, she's had the engine rebuilt, as well as brakes and suspension. Now focusing on the body. Not too much rust, just original paint work that's starting to show it's age. She's starting to look really good now compared to when I first got her.

Looking forward to learning as much as I can about these cars on this forum. Thank you.

Cheers
Mike

Welcome to the forum Mike,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

I know you've already found your way to the XJ6 Series I, II & III tech forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the Australia - South Australia Region forum by following this link Australia - South / NT - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Hi Mike, I'm in SA as well. I have a 79 series III and working through the repairs and up grade. My Jag goes to the mechanic next Tuesday for a new radiator, air conditioner pipes to be put back in place, the areal motor fixed and then have some answers for where the car fumes are coming from.

Somewhere down the track I want to get the interior updated, new carpet, the seats need some work especially the back seat, I would like to get the roof lining back up to the roof rather than sagging in the middle.

I've got a list of things that I want done. My Jag is my everyday drive, I just love it.

Thanks guys for the welcome

There is certainly is a wealth of info on this site.

o1xjr - yeah they look to be the same vintage. I really like the colour of your car. Mine is Warwick Grey, which isn't bad, but certainly doesn't looks a stunning as that silver.

Charzam - welcome to you also. Where abouts do you take your car for mechanical work? I'm just getting roof lining sorted in my car this week, hoping to pick it up in the next few days.

Hi Mike, I take my car to Barry Hammond - Hammond repairs, Melrose Park. He knows Jag's well enough for me and is my $500. mechanic lol. I'm getting a new radiator put in on, the areal motor fixed, and the air con pipe things put back on Tuesday. I'm hoping he can find the cause of the fumes coming in. From researching this site I have given him quite a few directions to go in. ( I sounded quite knowledgable for a while there)

I'm also looking at getting my interior upgraded and did some leg work today and was put onto GURU Leather at Woodville West. My roof is sagging in my car and he gave me some good pointers. Buy a roof from the wreckers for $100. make sure it has no water marks etc on it. Frank at GURU is cheaper than most interior restorations for cars and knows what he's doing. Frank's retired but looking at his so called back yard work shop, you wouldn't think so. I'm taking the plunge and getting Frank to completely restore the interior and line the boot. Franks has a variety of colours to choose from, I'm sticking to the black leather with light blue carpet as my jag is light blue.

$5000. will get me all of the back and both front seats recovered, foam replaced, spring in the seats replace, the boot fully lined with carpet, rubber replaced around the seals of the all doors and boot, carpet throughout which includes underlays etc, steering wheel cover, console recovered, the roof repaired so there's no sag in the middle and a few other little nips and tucks around vents.

When the seats and carpet are out I can then check to see what condition the plugs are in, hoping there's a tight seal with in. Where the plugs are is a mystery for me

I am excited to find someone who can pimp my jag just nicely for me. I haven't told my husband how much the cost is. I might do that after I'm paying my deposit tomorrow, book the car in for the final fit of refurbished interior at the end of March. Between now and then Franks will start making the seats etc through patterns taken from my. Frank will have the car for a day at a time, with the last two days used for putting it all together.

Not to sure how much weight this comment from Frank has, but he says that the XJ6 1,2 & 3 are going to increase in value quite a lot in the next yr or so. I hope they do, I bought my jag with the view that I'd rather buy a car and work on improving the condition of it to where a profit is made.

She is being delivered to the paint shop tomorrow for a spruce-up. Close ups tell the real storey. I parked outside a couple of weeks ago and we had 150mm of rain in 12 hours and the paint (clear coat blistered)

I don't expect to make a profit on mine, it owes me more than 3 times the purchase price as it sits before it gets painted this week.

And there are still plenty of S1/2/3's out there to be had for a bargain, nearly bought a runner last week for $500......if only I had the space I would buy a fleet and wait for Frank's increase in value.

Ah that sucks. Is that the result of a previous owner's respray?
Should look really good when it's spruced up.

Bugga about the rain blistering the clear coat. I'm planning on hanging onto my jag for as long as she'll keep running. I just have to find all the positive excuses to justify the cost for my hubby.

Most things have been the result of the previous owner.

It will look the same in the photo's either way.
