Default Jaguars are my elixir and Kryptonite all in one

Hi All
I have owned various Jags throughout my life usually from new as company cars and a few as second hand workhorses, but all have been used and driven primarily for work. they have always been the level that was basic upper middle management options (if you were lucky) or the bargain basement models when times were lean. when they were very lean it was (God forbid) BMWs...

I decided to set myself a challenge and buy a good 1999 high spec S type for wait for it...under a grand!. I love them and I know they are a marmite car, I could spend more but why should I?... was the question I was asking myself... That and I have always loved the early S type. So I have waited extremely patiently and now found an 1999 model with wait for it 62000 miles on the clock.
it has every dealer stamped service from 1999 to 2020 and no visible rust.. It has a little surface corrosion underneath and the track/tie rods are looking tired but other than that its a spanker.
As this car is for family use and my wife only drive auto I have gone for the auto. I know, I know its not a manual... but then again its not a 4.0 or a 4.2 R model either and when the lockdown is over I plan to be doing mostly leisure mileage and the odd 500 mile round trip 3 or 4 times a month for work its going to be doing no more than wafting up a motorwat now and again and being taken into the country now and again.
I wanted to say hi and apologise in advance for my stupid questions and constant bad jokes... that's if you even let me in! ;o)
Also to say the car was advertised for 1250 pounds and I got it for 900... so I have a 100 pounds left to ruin it with a stick on leaping panther (that is a joke please, please don't flame me ;o). I not sure if this forum has a lot of US owners but for you guys that's like 74 cents and for my euro friends I don't know any more we are out of your club (another reason to buy a British brand, if you are a euro sceptic there's a thought of Jaguars as the future TATA Trabant ubiquitous and dependable... mostly ;o) , if the UK ends up like east Germany if we end up falling out with Europe now ;o)!)... but anyway 900 is chump change for a 66k one in this condition.
Everything works and all the right noises are there and none that shouldn't be.
Looking forward to hopefully many years of unfussed wafting from place to place in that way only a Jaguar can do... even if it is a Ford... sorry I didnt mean that. just joking. but I do remember at the time the 99 S type being really slammed for its controls! and you know what time has been kind to it I think... DO you agree?.......................I am joking...nope they are still horrible but they come with the aim to buy a 100% standard car...
Any way hi again, and to say I am looking forward to chatting about pointless things and waxing on for hours about Every type of cat... My favourites are EES and DEES ;o)
But very happy with this little bargain here is some photos (a bit muddy but no marks ;o)

I

Its got stamps to the last period and was last done at 58,000 miles. Its now at 62,000

I love the lines and the profile. Some think it looks like a koala with a nut in its mouth...!

Only found one minor graze on the offside sliver bumper trim... literally nothing else! no rust in any wells and underneath is OK too, hmmm I wonder about under the sill covers though ;o)!

Welcome to the forums Jack,

Good to have you with us.

I can see you've already found your way to the S-Type forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. You can also use the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk-eire-68/ to find other members in your region.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Enjoy the forums and wafting again if this lockdown ever ends.

Graham

From one S-type owner to another... Welcome. The S-type forum is populated with a very friendly group and contains a wealth of knowledge.

As far as time being kind to the design, well in many places prices are going up on the S-type; I suspect that you could not have found a "facelift" model in similar condition for that kind of money... that said, you did well.

Enjoy!

Default 2000 S type automatic transmission

Welcome to the forum, I loved both the S types I've owned, and driven well and for your 1999 model I offer my experience as a future guide. I bought the 2000 model, opal was the colour, full race trim on the 3.0 V6. Tricked it up with drilled and slotted discs, high end slim alloys, It was a super ride. Well, after driving it around western canada for a few years the old tranny started giving me jip, slipping in and down changing quite sharply. The dealership inspected it, and quite rightly offered me an exchange transmission for a mere $11K, ouch. Declined I must say. A local branch of the A1 transmission specialists gave me a decent price for a rebuild which I accepted. Now being a sealed housing? (what, they put some wax on the drain plug and say don't open) the tech said they could try changing the common parts of the Ford gearbox and go from there. Great, but with shipping errors and bad weather it took about 5 weeks. Now, this is the point, the tech, when I came to pick up the car ran through the worksheet and rather sheepishly told me that they had followed all the breakdown instructions but not until the rebuild did they find out that the pressure balancing governer was the faulty item (I think, it was 15 years ago) which they had replaced also. It could have saved a couple of grand. But the just in-case thought I offer, is if this happens to your baby, it could save you a few pounds too. Enjoy.
