Default Just a girl with her new Jaguar, IL

Hi everyone,

I'm here because I'm a women that just bought my first Jaguar and wanted to find a like minded group of people who also love their Jaguars and to give advice on issues that may come up.

This maybe a little bit of a rant but I love cars and love working on cars. If a light goes off on my car I'm instantly searching online at what the issue could be so that when I go into the dealership I can explain and point to exactly what is happening and what needs to be done. I just took my car into the dealership because my engine coolant light went on and I read on the dealerships website that it is often common that the engine coolant fluid runs low if the winter has been harsh and were driving a lot which I was... The service guy totally disregarded me and said he could smell fluid so they may have the car for a few weeks. I literally clutched my pearls and said are you kidding me? He said what's the big deal? Do you have a vacation your going on? I was offended and shocked that he assumed I was some rich house wife. I replied with no, this is my only car, I'm single, have a job, and a life!
Needless to say.. he called me the next day and said the coolant fluid was low and just needed to be topped off after they spent the whole day putting it under a stress test. I go so.. just like a told you...
This isn't the only instance.. if a guy asks me on a date he will ask what boyfriend bought me my car and have even been told my car is a piece of junk and no better then a Toyota. Why do I get treated like this? I thought people would respect the fact that I make enough money to support myself and give myself a quality of life without depending on anyone.

Hello,
Congratulations on your new Jaguar!
Part of the reason Men treat you like they do is, quite frankly, They're Jealous (there's nothing quite so Obnoxious as a jealous man)

Another reason is that they feel Threatened (which only adds to their Obnoxiousness) by a woman who walks in and tells them Exactly what's wrong with a relatively new car. In this male dominated world (yes, even in 2022) women just aren't supposed to do that. We're supposed to mince into the service department, half afraid, and describe in the most Vague terms that there's light thingy on and it doesn't match our nail color, can the Big Strong Macho man please fix it.

And by the way, You are dating the WRONG MEN! Find one who RESPECTS you and your ability to support yourself and control your own life! He should treat you with respect BEFORE you date him which means you get to know him FIRST!

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Well, today, very few males have even the slightest clue what goes on under the hood of a car and mechanics know to take advantage of it. When I was kid 50 years ago, growing up in a blue-collar neighborhood, many of the fathers maintained their own cars and even had old hot rod projects in the garage. It was common to see three or four of the neighbors standing around drinking a beer and giving unwanted advice while one of them tinkered with a carburetor or brake drum. I never see that anymore. Outside of going to car shows and such, I never meet any men who work on their own car. Never. Even among gearheads, it seems much, much fewer now do their own repair or restoration work than 35 years ago when I participated in my first car show.

Mechanics know that if somebody comes in with a check engine light glowing, they can get away with telling anyone anything and get paid for it. In that, I don't think they are any worse about ripping off women. Some mechanics may talk down to a woman while ripping her off vs. more slyly conning a man, but I bet both get ripped off about evenly nowadays. (Statistics are probably skewed because we men think we're too smart to get ripped off and wouldn't ever admit it if we discovered that we were.)

Welcome to the Forum. Be assured all men are not like that. and most certainly things have changed. You simply have to be diligent, and if you seem to keep finding the same lousy kind of men. Consider where you might be looking? Just a thought. Congrats on owning a Jag, and being your own person, and for creating your own world in spite of adversity.
