Looking at an X type tomorrow.
Hello all. I'm new to the jaguar world. I'm currently a Taurus SHO owner and on shoforum. I am looking at an 02 x type tomorrow. It has a 2.5 in it with awd. It has 100k on it and dealer maintained. Was wondering if its a good car and what to look for. Thanks guys.

Hi Showtime,
Welcome to the forum, you have definately got good taste!
I have the same model, 2.5 Sport and can certainly advise..
See what you may need for the following links:

Anything else feel free to ask?
You may want to look underneath to check sills for rust/bad jacking, chassis and general all round electrics and ask whether the transfer case has had issues or been changed, that model in the UK had issues but I am not sure of the US spec, from what I've heard, you may want to ask guys like Thermo who is up well to scratch on technical info.
Good Luck and we hope to see your pride and joy soon!
All the Best and Happy Hunting! Stu

For your info Showtime,
In my view I have owned a 2005 2.5 SE and own and still have a late 2002 2.5 Sport and they are both fine cars.
My transfer case was changed 3 years ago and I have not had issues apart from a new coolant thermostat and am now dealing with a minor bit of rust on the sills, which I should have looked out for! (self-inflicted!) The car is ace, comfortable, the All Wheel Drive is awesome, sublime and very very capable in all extremes and I wish to keep this car for a long time, as I have said, if I won the lotto, yeah I'd go mad... XKR, XJR and so on and so forth, yes every car would be a Jaguar but I would still keep and run my AWD X~Type and although I like to put my foot down, overtaking and wanting a bit of open road for myself, I've never ever had the urge to go for the 3.0 Litre, but friends have them and I think it's a superb car TOO!
I personally would spend a lot of time inspecting this car as it's going to be YOURS, Good Luck in your choice!
I stole this info below, from Thermo and I don't think he'll do me for copyright, yoiks! :
Nighteyes/Evalina, the 02/03/early04 cars had a transfer case with a viscous coupling in it to split the power front to rear. Due to the design (and I think a bad setup from the factory), this style transfer case was prone to the bearings failing if you were hard on the gas (ie, liked to jump light to light, frequent shifts with the engine RPM over 4,000, etc). You drive it sensibly and only abuse the power in limited applications, the car will last forever. The later cars did not have the viscous coupling in them so the power shift front to rear is referred to as an "open" system (ie, if a single wheel starts to slip, it is going to take all the power from other 3 wheels). So, if you get a newer X-Type, make sure that it has the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) in the car. This will be obvious as you sit in the car as you can look down and next to the gear shift will be 2 buttons, one marked "S" (sport mode, if you want to know about this, let me know, but all X-Types have this button) and then the other will be "DSC". if you only have the one button, you don't have DSC.
As for longevity of the transfer case, I have 142K on my car, original transfer case and I have an 03 car. No noises and no signs that the transfer case is going to fail on me. Personally, I would rather have the earlier cars since the transfer case works much better in adverse weather.
As for maintenance, this car is not any worse than other vehicles I have owned. The cost of the parts is a little more, but if you know where to buy stuff, it isn't that bad. Working on the X-Type is just like working on any Ford product. Jag was owned by Ford during these years, so, the concept of how the car is built and maintained is very similar to any Ford vehicle. So, if you have some mechanical ability, you can do pretty much anything you want to this car.

Thanks for all the info guys. It's going to be for my fiancé. Just looking for a nice reliable car. We've been looking at audi a4s, and BMW 3 series also. But since I'm more of a ford guy and always loved the look of an x type that's what we are leaning towards.

Well it drove nice. The body had its fair share of scratches and whatnot. Needs front suspension and feels like ball joints. Driver seat was worn past my liking. Not worth $5k IMHO. Oh well ill keep looking.
Disappointing for you but sounds to be the right decision.
The suspension issues wouldn't be too expensive to put right but interior trim can be a frightening cost.
Be patient and keep on searching.
