Hi,

I bought a xj8 (1997) and drove it a few years. Had a road breakdown in 2009 and let it set up for a few years. Finally had it towed to a garage and had the water pump and radiator replaced along with some tank. Now it is in my garage. It needs more work but I don't want to let it be a money trap. I have been researching this forum and no doubt it is a nikasil engine with about 105k miles on it.

It has some starting issues but starts most of the time. I think my first project is to do an oil change with some Restore additive. Then new tires because the tires were ruined setting up.

Is this a worthwhile project? Advise really appreciated.

A very warm welcome to the forum.

It doesn't have to be a money pit if you are wise in your purchases and can do most of the work yourself.

This is certainly the place to be for an invaluable source of information.

Post up some pics when you can. Enjoy.

Welcome to the forum pmheindl,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

It sounds like you had cooling issues when it was towed. Provided it didn't seriously overheat, there should be no worries. Also with any Nikasil engines that were going to have excessive bore wear, it usually happened long before ten years old.

Follow this link XK8 / XKR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XK8/XKR forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Welcome from ElinorB.
Your car will only be a money trap if you let it. By that I mean, every little thing you run to the repair shop or throw expensive parts at it before you know exactly what's wrong.

My car is more than 20 years older than yours, and suffered from deferred maintenance, neglect and abuse for several years before she came to live with us. It hasn't become a money pit (but it easily could have) because I've taken the time to know Exactly the problem and find proper but economically priced parts and done the work myself.

You Will find surprises, some of them unpleasant, but if you're willing to spend the time and effort (taking advice from these Very knowledgeable forums) your car will Certainly be a worthwhile project. Not only that, you'll find deep satisfaction in every victory, and there will be many.
