Mike Dean 1985 XJ12 S3 Sovereign
Hi all, I am a new member.
I have owned 16 Jaguars over a period of 30 years including E Types, XK150, XJS's, XJC, XJ6's, XJ 40 etc. 3 of them were 12 's.
I now have a low mileage 1985 XJ12 Sovereign. This is in pristine, original, showroom condition, and is driven about 2,500 kms a year (Australia)
I have developed what appears to be a fuel problem?
The engine will start, but will stall if any accelerator is used.
I noticed over the past few months that when I filled both fuel tanks, the left hand tank tended to refill the right hand tank instead of supplying directly to the engine.
As I now live in regional Australia, we have no Jaguar expertise that I can call on, and the mere mention of an unknown problem to any mechanic scares them stupid, and myself as to the cost of educating them?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Mike Dean

Welcome to the forum. Ken"cat_as trophy", your regional coordinator is just up the road from you in Coffs Harbour, he may know local experts as he has been in the area and owned Jaguars longer than I have been alive.

Hello, Mike,
How often do we see such a story as yours, regarding the lack of qualified mechanics!!
That's why this site exists; to help Jaguar owners like you get their cats in hand. You'll find a great deal of talent and expertise among members here.
Welcome from ElinorB.

Hmmmm.
My gut feeling is that the TPS is on the blink. If nothing else it's a candidate that must be eliminated.
It can be checked with a volt meter.
Post back if you want the details on that

"Tended"? Not quite sure what you mean there. Is this an existing problem? Or has it been fixed?
The system is designed to return unused fuel to the same tank it was drawn from. Offhand it sounds like fuel is being drawn from the left tank but being returned to the right tank....so as the left tank depletes the right tank fills!
Here is some info

(Thanks for the info. Please advise on TPS details as I cannot locate in manuals? Mike)
The TPS, located under the throttle capstan, has red, yellow, and green wires.
Hook a volt meter between the red and yellow wires (leaving eveything plugged in....you'll have to pierce the insulation). Turn key 'on'
You should get a reading of about .32-.36 volts with the throttle at idle position. Very slowly and smoothly open the throttle. The voltage should *smoothly* increase without any up/down spikes. Any spikes or dead spots suggests a faulty TPS
At wide open throttle you should see 4.8-5.0 volts.
Cheers

HUGE Welcome Mike ... my apologies for being late to the party ... but great to have you joining us here on Jaguar Forums. Graham [GGG], Norri and Clarke [o1xjr] have all contributed useful links which I encourage you to act upon ... especially the advice to edit your signature to provide a permanent note of your Jaguar's year/model/engine/variant to ensure that all advice from our gurus is accurate and relevant.
I would also ask you to jump into the Australian sections ... firstly NSW&ACT (use the link in my sig) to say "hello" in our Roll Call thread to all the rest of the gang here. Please note I can then add you and your car details to our Membership List. Then jump across the border into Clarke's maroon country (plenty of Cats in SE QLD and Bris/Gold Coast in particular) ... and also SA&NT ( coz the Australian V12 guru [Grant Francis] is regional co-ordinator there - and one very knowledgeable and friendly fella).
I note you have already tagged up with [Doug] Dwyer ... whose knowledge and friendly help is renowned across the XJ and other of our forums ... a great example of why we are proud to call Jaguar Forums the premier and friendliest means of maintaining your Jaguar.
Mike, I'll try to monitor your progress on this fuel tank issue, but suggest you first work through your current issues with [Doug], [Grant Francis] and [o1xjr]. Down the track, I'll ask you to give me some clues as to how confident and willing you are to work on your car yourself ... always an important input prior to recommending services in regional Australia. Beyond routine maintenance, there are a couple of well respected Jaguar service shops. Let us know your requirements.
I was hoping to get up to Brisbane soon to catch up with Clarke ... maybe your joining gives us an excuse to meet part-way in Ballina?
Great to have you with us. Jump in and enjoy!
Best wishes Mike,
Ken
