Default Need Help with Jag Dream

Hi. I'm in Denver, Colorado. I've had a 1994 Mazda Miata for 17 years and it just passed it's physical. I want to buy an XJ6 or an XJ6 Vanden Plas, and I need guidance. I've gleaned the following criteria from reading this forum.

I'm looking for:

The 1995, 1996, or 1997 model years;
A car that has spent most of its time in states deemed non-rust;
A car with complete service records;
Non-smoking car;
Obviously one that will pass an independent inspection;
A car that has been driven daily or weekly -- in other words on a regular basis;
One that has between 80K to 110K;
I'm willing to pay in the $4000 to $5000 range.

I would appreciate comments and any suggestions on how to go forward. I am not in any hurry. Thanks, Bird

Welcome to the forum Bird,

You've clearly done your research and know what to look for.

Three sections to check on the forum to get information on available vehicles meeting your requirements:

1. the X300 tech section:
XJ X300 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

2. the Central US Region section:
Central US - MT WY CO ND SD NE KS - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

3. the Private For Sale / Trade Classifieds section:
PRIVATE For Sale / Trade Classifieds - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

In addition, if you find a likely vehicle too far away for a convenient viewing, there's been many instances of members checking out vehicles in their own areas on behalf of other members.

Good luck with the search and enjoy the forum.

Graam

Yes, that is the dream. I am treading carefully and trying to cover all my bases because I'm that way -- and my husband is not wild about this idea. I plan to talk to a few Jaguar mechanics in Denver to get some idea of what I may be getting myself into. My 1994 Miata just passed it's physical at 110K and it will be my backup should I run into any mechanical trouble that is beyond me. Again, thanks, Bird

Go to the "X300" section. At the top, in one of ths sticky topics, you'll find a buyer's guide that may give a few good tidbits.

Cheers

Make sure you talk to real "Jaguar Techs," not just mechanics. Most mechanics have very little real knowledge of our cars, don't want to work on them due to fear and/or lack of knowledge, and will simply parrot the "needs a lot of maintenance and costs a lot to keep running" mantra that they have heard about the cars over the years.

Case in point: I have a local mechanic that does work on my equipment used in my business. When I bought my Jag he gave me the "high maintenance and cost" speech and told me that he did not work on Jags, period.

Fast forward two years and the guy closed his shop and went to work for another, local, well respected shop. I call him to see how he is doing and he tells me that he is putting new secondary tensionsers in a 98 XJ8L that day.

I reminded him that he told me he did not work on Jags. He said that after he did some research, he found out that they were actually pretty good cars and they were really not that difficult to repair.

Old reputations and beliefs take a long time to filter out of the collective consciousness.

Thanks for your advice on mechanics. After I wrote that, I thought, I should really have said techs. Thoughtless of me. I love your story about your mechanic. The stories I've been reading really tell me a lot, and I appreciate it. Bird
