Exclamation Need recommendation on Supercharged Jag

Hey guys!

My lovely bride has told me that sometime in the Spring of 2015 I can go ahead and get a Jag. I've loved the car since Edward Woodward drove one in the TV series "The Equalizer.."

I've only got up to around $18K to spend and I'd like to get a nice used Jag with a Supercharger. Can you guys please tell me which models included the Supercharger? I've been looking on eBay and Autotrader and it seems that I can afford a decent used Jag model year 2000-2005 which is fine by me, I just don't know what models to hunt for. Also if you have any personal recommendations on how to look for a good used Jag I'd love to hear from you!! I'm 53 so I'm looking at it from the stand-point of my time to get a "new car" is pretty limited..

Thanks in advance!!!

Chris R.

Welcome to the forum Chris,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

Models ending in 'R' are the supercharged versions.

Follow this link XJ ( X308 ) XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 forum for help, advice and information on the steel bodied XJR model produced up to 2003 and this one XJ ( X350 & X358 ) XJ6 / XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X350 forum for the aluminium bodied XJR which replaced it.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Talking Many thanks!!

Hey guys!

Thanks for all of the replies.. This has to be one of the most useful and kind group if guys that I have found!

Right now I drive a Chevy Volt and plan on keeping that car (it's great!) but I've always wanted a Jag and since I'm 53, I have to start thinking about how many "new cars" I have left.. I love the Jag, Edward Woodward in the TV series "The Equalizer" got me hooked back in 1989. Now, I see so many Jags on Autotrader and eBay and suddenly the used models are actually affordable! Of course, with premium gas going for $4 a gallon I'm sure it'd cost $120 to fill up a Jag so it's definitely my weekend-only dream car..

I won't be ready until Spring 2015 but then I'm going for it!

Thanks again for your kind replies!!! I hope to become a true member of "the family" by March of 2015.

Respectfully,

Chris R.

I'm gonna offer you my totally biased opinion: 1995-97. The supercharged inline 6. It is the purer Jag than the V8s that followed (if you care about that kind or thing, and you may come to once you get one). It isn't the fastest Jag, but it is a great one with a good solid engine that lasts a lot of miles. Probably get one for half your budget, then have tons left for mods or maintenance (they really aren't bad. I found the parts to be cheaper than for my much-newer Toyota). I guess what I'm saying is I want one.

I put over 60,000 miles on a 1995 XJ6 and the only thing I would change would be to get the supercharged version next time.

Thumbs up Thanks!!!!

Thank you for all of your help and replies.. This is one of the nicest group of gents that I've met, so thanks again!!!!!!

Luckily I have time on my side so I'm still debating a supercharged Jag versus the XK series (also supercharged). I'm 53 and work as an IT Specialist for the Department of the Army for the past 30 years at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. I'm a geek at heart but have no mechanical skills whatsoever, so I'm looking for a cream-puff that requires little to no maintenance on my end. I can't mod anything and even if I could I have a family of four to support on a Goverment salary so spending $$ on mods just isn't my thing, I know you all understand.

I've had a number of cars over my lifetime and now that I am 53 I realize that "This ride is coming to an end.." so I'm looking for my Jag dream car.. Is it a 2-door coupe, certainly looks cool but I'm not a fan of ragtops, what about the XJRs, maybe, what about the XK series, maybe too I love the dash layout on the XK series.

So sometime in the Spring of 2015 I need to make up my mind.. my wife is supportive and getting together the cash for something at or under $20K should not be a problem, I just need advice from someone way smarter than me on what direction I should take. My fear, as you may know, is that I'm getting into something that's going to cost a lot of $$$ to repair, so I need to choose wisely.

Thanks again for your replies and the support from this forum!!!! I appreciate any and all replies!!!!

Sorry it took so long to reply but I had my right lung removed in May and my time on the PC is now somewhat limited (note that I'm a non-smoker, I had something called a sequestration attached to my right lung so it had to go..).

Thanks again gents!! I feel that I am in very good company here!!

Respectfully,

Chris R.

Chris,

I hope you are making a good recovery from that major surgery.

Whichever model you decide is the one for you, the most critical consideration with any used Jaguar is a comprehensive service history. Service intervals are 12K Miles OR 12 Months on the earlier models and 15K Miles OR 12 Months on the current ones. Any gaps in the record should be questioned closely. There's plenty of good ones well within your budget range but a bad one can be a money pit.

Have you looked through the forum Classifieds?:

If you find examples advertised elsewhere, members will always give advice and have been known to go and check them out for a prospective buyer!

Default Jaguar XJR

Hi Chris.

I purchased a 2005 Jaguar XJR in MD a few months ago after about a year of research. Then it had 99,000 miles. According to the CARFAX report it was a single owner vehicle. I have had several Jags in England and here in the USA.
I do most of the maintenance on all of my vehicles and in the past have rebuilt Jaguar engines myself. I am retired so have the time to do the work.
I love the looks of the 2005 XJR. Since I purchased it I absolutely love the car!
The performance absolutely surprised me and I include handling. I managed to avoid a deer in the road at 80mph with almost no room to maneuver with almost no warning after only 1 month of ownership. I was so impressed with the handling in that situation. I know I have to do some maintenance work in the next few months. I have just replaced the spark plugs. The car itself looks almost new inside and out. I paid $13000 which was lower, for the year, than anything else within 100 miles because of the mileage.

Hi Chris, Graham is right about the supercharged Jag you buy. From what I've seen the way the car was maintained is more important than which has lower miles/color/options. I've seen XJS coupes with over 110k miles on them that could have been show cars and, aside from tires, brakes, filters and fluid never has anything but the battery replaced (love those people).

Any brand new R owner, is in an upper income class and 99% of the time, older. Older people just seem to take care of their automobiles better, and have more than the Jag to drive.

If you stay at or under 2005, you can get any Jag you want. The aluminum XJR would be my top recommendation. Just make sure it's legitimate and not a hidden flood or salvage car. Make sure you have an experienced Jag tech go though a safety inspection to make sure you know if or what it needs to pass. It's just under $200 and will be well worth it.

If the seller refuses then walk. It's not worth it. I've seen horror stories that really make me sad. Two cars welded back to make one and sold at a Audi dealership...(somehow legal in MI). Flood cars sold without the new owners knowing and forever having electrical issues...etc...

Currently there's a 2011 XJL for sale at $29,000 that has a salvage title my friend just checked out. The auto repair shop selling it told him a local Jaguar dealer checked it out and certified it, which is complete B.S. Most likely it was a Select Edition car before the accident, but that certification would be voided by any accident so severe the insurance company branded it as totaled. They also said they did all the repair work.

I question if they have the Jaguar approved bonding machine needed for the aluminium Jaguars, but perhaps the price has gone down on those machines? More likely they used something not appropriate or approved to re bond it back together. Scary either way.

Any R Jag is a wonderful if not incredible machine. You'll love it once you buy the right one. Just be safe and take your time.

Cheers,

Hi Chris.
I second what GGabriel says. Its been almost a year since I posted about my 2005 XJR and I still love it. I bought it at 99,000 miles and it had obviously been well looked after. I have performed preventative maintenance as well as upgrades on it over the year and it performs flawlessly as well as being a joy to drive.
