Default Nervous XKR Owner

I was just starting to look for a retro ragtop to enjoy my 10 commute along Coast Highway when a 2001 XKR convertible with 43K miles showed up in a local gas station lot with a "For Sale" sign. Jump cut, I am now the owner but not entirely sure what I have gotten myself into.

I am looking for mechanic recommendations from Newport to SJC, the usual, honest, cares about the brand, not out to fund their retirement plan on my car. Also looking for suggestions about how to stay ahead of problems. Everything works well but I know there are a few things to be fixed based on post purchase inspection. Then there is that nagging but minor oil burning smell, no smoke, no drips just odor. I sense I may have "tensioner" issues but I'd like to learn all I can. Not much that I can do myself but not afraid to take on the simpler stuff.

Having said all that, what a pleasure to cruise up the coast with top down. Love the ride, classic lines, agility and power. Thanks in advacne for anyone who cares to chime in.

Welcome to the forum CJ Palaway,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

A Jaguar, top down and driving along the coast in the California sunshine - I wish I had your worries.

The burned oil smell is probably nothing more than a slight leak from one of the camshaft cover seals onto the hot exhaust. More a nuisance than a worry. Can't be so relaxed about tensioners - you'll find plenty of info in the 'HOW TO' FAQ's on checking exactly what is fitted to your engine.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-17/ to the XK8/XKR forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Western Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/western-us-ak-ca-nv-ut-hi-wa-id-38/
to find other members in your region. Members here should be able to help you find local mechanics.

Enjoy the forums.

Thanks for the replies, plenty to look through. I haven't searched it yet but will look for tips on refinishing wood steering wheel.
