Default New Canada 2002 XJ8 Sport guy

Hello one and all, and thanks in advance for providing such a great place to share Jag issues. Purchased a 2002 Xj8 Sport over a year ago and everything was working perfect until just recently. 136,000km - tranny has gone weird. First time was just getting going and at about 30km/h a big bang thump from under car - thought maybe I had ran over a piece of metal and it had hit the undercarriage - this lasted only a second or so then stopped - everything OK. Very similar issue about a week later then noise suddenly stopped again. Yesterday, the noises started coming after having driven for 10km or so and it happened at parking lot speed - it sounded really bad and continued right to a stop. Put car in neutral then back into drive and it was good to go again. 30 minutes later drove the 10km home and no issues. So - A drum? Low or poor fluids? U joint? Really freaked out to say the least! More to come!
Thanks

Larry in Calgary

There have been two threads in the last week where people with the same transmission have been able to solve their shifting problems by doing two or three back to back fluid changes. Certainly a lot cheaper than a rebuild.

Thanks for all your replies! Guess what? No tranny problem whatsoever. It was a rear wheel bearing that basically tore itself up. Our local ******* (whoops, I meant dealer) offered to reapir it for 'a minimum' of $1600 plus a 4 wheel alignment at a cost of 'at least' $700. Wow! Anyway, I bought a bearing, axle nut, shims for $150, had a guy press the bearings for $100 and guess what - all's good! By the way, found a shop in Calgary that did the 4 wheel for $125 - seems perfect.
But, there's always a but, now a humming has developed at 48-55 kph and 95-105 kph. Thought it may be tire noise (new P Zero Nero) but that doesn't seem to be the case - have tried different pressures to no effect. Any guesses? My thoughts are that it may be early signs of the other rear wheel bearing starting to go. There is a bit of play - any suggestions?
Thanks again!
